This is slightly different than LPs, but personally I really enjoyed watching my sister play through Final Fantasy VII and VIII over a couple of summers to the point where I didn't feel the need to play through them myself, even though I enjoy rpgs. It started out with me waiting my turn, but I got absorbed enough in what was going on through her eyes, even though we have pretty different playstyles and I wasn't always paying 100% attention through her playthroughs, either.

But admittedly, it's a big difference from LPs on YouTube (which wasn't even around then), since the two of us could interact -- joke about characters, or be jazzed at a fancy new spell, or shocked at a plot twist, or consult on a choice screen. Still, though, watching her take on ridiculous bosses instead of me, or making a difficult choice, even if it's not the choice I would have taken, still felt like big things just because I'd played other Final Fantasies and rpgs in general and knew those feelings.

(...I'll also admit I had a lot less patience for the main characters of those games than she did, which probably contributed to feeling like I didn't have to play them :P)
