First game I ever fell in love with, I read walkthroughs, watched videos, read fanfiction, collected fanart and wrote stories for it before I ever played the games. Played the games and didn't really learn anything more about the canon than I already knew, though I discovered that I fucking loved hack-and-slash. Not playing a game doesn't affect my ability to interact with fandom using canon knowledge, only my ability to advise how to beat Nightmare in DMD mode - which I couldn't do even when I finished the game, because I'm not a fucking magician.

And I think you're seriously underestimating how gaming equipment runs for some of us. I've been looking for a break in my general poverty in order to get a PS3 (and a television to play it on) for years. Bayonetta, my sweet, we shall be together one day. One day.

True 'dat, but both of those things are huge parts of the gaming fandom. Some people emphasize the former, others are solely concerned with the latter, but they're both important.

I dunno, where would you be if you hadn't discovered you loved hack and slash? I just think non-players are missing out, big time.
