According to a recent study, only 10% of gamers actually finish their game.
So if someone watches a whole LP on youtube, they've got more experience with the story than 90% of the "true" fans. Sure, we don't pick up consoles, but we know how it ends and what the gameplay looks like! And if we watch certain playthroughs, we see all the secrets and sidequests gamers skipped out on because they were busy or bored or just plain missed them.

You don't need to know button combos to write a good fanfic, you need a grasp of the characters and the stories, which LPs give you.
