Okay, now I want to know. What is the most obscure fandom of all time? (Fandoms that actually exist, that is). I'm going to go with my first fandom, The Forgotten Realms, as the one that the fewest people online have heard of. It exists on FF. That's pretty much it.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-17 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooh, I want to play.
Books of Magic. I think there's like 10 people tops in this fandom, including lurkers, which is weird because it's one of Neil Gaiman's books.

Crest of the Stars and its sequels. Does anyone besides me love that series entirely too much?

(Anonymous) 2012-09-18 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Um, I do? But I've rarely met anyone else who's even watched the series, let alone liked it. Which is a shame, because it's one of the best SF anime series that I've ever seen.

Oh my god, I was just about to comment with that series, and then I saw your comment!

I've heard of it! I know some people who are trying to get it going again, actually.

...there are lots of fandoms that consist of like two people trying very hard to pretend two is enough to make a fandom, not counting *all* of yuletide, I think it is impossible to pick a winner here.

(Well, maybe Ghost Soup Infidel Orange? Even most people in the other Ghost Soup Infidel fandoms have never heard of it.)

I know of the Forgotten Realms. Those books were a staple of my childhood. I didn't really think about whether or not it had an online fandom, though.

Future GPX Cyber Formula has some 5 or less active people in the English-speaking fandom; I've read/found only two fanfics, and one of them is mine.

In Japan, it has a solid core fandom, but it never really got the chance out here. So I live on Pixiv and google searches if I want new stuff.

You know, I'm in a really small fandom (as in, a hundred people might have been involved at its highest point, which it's long since passed). I tend to write crossovers because I was originally in a much larger fandom and I know the vast majority of my readers are familiar with it.

Write for yourself. Be as nice as you can be to any readers you get. Respond to readers and thank them for reviews. Get to know them. Sometimes you have a bunch of readers who won't leave reviews because they're lurkers or they're intimidated by you. I mean, I've found over the years that I do have steady readers who enjoy my work but don't leave reviews for various readons.

You will get better when you start writing for yourself and not just for reviews.

OP here

Oh, thank you, it really helps.

I'm not writing for reviews, though, I enjoy it greatly. In the first place I wasn't even intending to publish the thing.

If you want to write it, write it. The fics I've put the most effort into are for small, fairly inactive fandoms, and even if I don't get much recognition in the end, the time I've spend working on them has been a lot of fun. And odds are there's at least one person out there who would love to see new fic for said small inactive fandom. I know I would.

I'm going to be wacky and guess HalloweenTown or Don't Look Under The Bed, since it's about that time of year.

OP

(Anonymous) 2012-09-18 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
No, you missed ;) It's way smaller. Like, there're three people in it, and I'm the only one who is currently active. 3 stories on AO3 and 3 on FF.net. You won't guess anyway, nobody knows it

???? What could it be? I was thinking some kind of modern something, but then you got all poetic, and so I gave that thousand years ago a little more credit. Monotheistic fandom? Is the bigger fandom you are related to based around a Holy Book and you write about a one-off story/example but give characters a whole new set of adventures?

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2012-09-18 12:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Aye, it's relatively "modern". The canon work was released in 2001.
No, it isn't connected to religious books. It's, in fact, real life-based fiction.

No chance :( I sometimes regret so much that it's so unpopular

That's the thing about small fandoms—there's almost no one around.

You mention kudos, so I guess you're posting your fic on AO3. Is there an LJ or DW comm for anything like this? Can you try friending the few people giving you comments and kudos? Try to form a community, try to find the like-minded, etc. It's a lot harder, to be sure! But the people you find will be more passionate, and more excited about the stuff that you write because there's so little of it.
