It bothers the hell out of me when a mod obviously doesn't care very much about a community and won't even bother to hand over the keys to somebody else, but if they're putting in as much effort as they can, I'm not too snotty to be grateful about it. The fact that they aren't paid for it isn't always a complaint, it's just meant as a reminder that they don't have to do what they do (which is a pretty big hint that they do it because they consider it worthwhile). And unless somebody really gets off on having some kind of authority over somebody else on the internet, is there anything particularly sparkly and rewarding to being a mod that outweighs the enjoyment anyone else gets out of a community?
