I'm one of the anons up thread and I admit I'm not an RPer. My experience with mods are from general forums, fan forums, LJ fan comms and fanfic comms. I could totally see different spaces having different types of mods and different reactions.

RP communities normally get made by mods who RP in them also, and they spend more time RPing than modding then get lazy when actual mod work like taking care of apps or taken characters lists and shit have to get done. Lots and lots of them use the excuse of not being paid or having no time, but everybody knows if they quit RPing their favorite pairing or WTFever for half an hour they could get shit done.

I get it's their community and they're here to have fun too but being a mod means you accepted a job and you do owe the players mod work. That's what being a mod means. It's not only setting up a community and deciding where the plot is going to go then sitting back and having control or something. Too many of them think that all modding is.

I've actually always been the reverse of that when modding an RP forum, and so have most people who mod that I know--mod stuff first, sometimes to the exclusion of actual posts. Hell, I admined at a semi-large RP forum for four years, and people who posted instead of doing mod and admin work were the exception, not the rule. When someone's free time took a hit, it was their RPing that tended to slow down.

Although that's probably because mod work takes less, or at least a different type of, effort than writing. I don't always have it in me to eke out a post, but it's not that hard to read an app and yes/no it.

It's a very very common phenomenon in LJ/DW RP.

I haven't Journal RPed in years, so that must be a bit of a shift; back when I was journal RPing the mods would focus on apps and so on over RPing.

Or maybe I was just in a small corner with good mods? Idk.
