Whoa, doujinshi shops are a thing? Do you have any recommendations as to which are good ones? :O

Mandarake in Nakano Broadway. There are about a bazillion (or maybe 15ish) Mandarake shops in that mall. Spend a day, see them all. Also check out otome road, which is a section of Ikebukuro. It's got a Mandarake, K-Books, Animate's flagship store, and a bunch of others. Some shops are strictly new, some are strictly used (which are always in great condition), and some are a mix. There are some shops in Akihabara, but they're aimed more at men.

If you're in Osaka, you'll find doujinshi shops all over denden town, though it's not quite as extreme as in Tokyo.

(OT: I cannot get past DW's captcha if I try to use OpenID. Does anyone else have this problem? I would love to be able to log in)

I second the Mandarake in Nakano, while I no longer live in Japan, I have so many good memories of that place (I go for the cels and rare collectibles.) Akihabara is good for some things, but I agree, Nakano for the doujin.

The Mandarake in Osaka is walking distance from Osaka Station, and is actually pretty decent. Most of my Final Fantasy VI doujinshi comes from there, and the toy selection can be pretty awesome. I lived 3 years in Kyoto, and I only went to Denden Town once. Mind, I spent some $800 in one day between Denden and the Shounen Jump Store in the Yodobashi Camera building by Osaka Station that day, and I think I made the conscious decision to avoid it from that point on.)

(Random Note: I'm not a big Gundam fan. The friend I was with, however, wanted to go to the Gundam Store. So we went. And I made the mistake of looking at the glass expensive shit display cases.

She got the one on the left, I got the one on the right. At the exchange rate at that point, it was about $275. ::groans::)

But I used the shit out of that case, and it made the trip back to the US with me, scratches and all.

But I digress.

If you live inside Japan, and are badly located to the nerdy shops, or want really old/obscure stuff, screw looking in stores. Go to Yahoo!Japan Auctions. I own some 40 Cyber Formula doujinshi, and every single one of them came from Y!J. Mandarake won't sell them, too old/obscure.

If you live outside Japan, but REALLY want those doujin, use a shopping service and go to Y!J. It won't be cheap, but it may be cheaper than paying the super inflated prices Japanese sellers LOVE posting obscure doujin on Ebay for.

(Sorry, I've had some problem with staying logged in here with OpenID, but not quite what you're describing. Maybe try another browser, or simply type your LJ username to identify yourself?)

Oh God, I've wanted one of those suitcases for so long now...! Are they as gorgeous in RL as they look in the photos? Uuuuuh, so jealous! If I ever get to visit Japan, I'll try to get one -- I'm not about to order one online; the shipping cost and custom fees would kill me ;_;

ayrt

Definitely Ikebukuro, which is a city in Tokyo if you're unfamiliar. In the Otome Road, it's like Akihabara for women, if that means anything - basically, same level of total geek but with more yaoi than hentai and loads of cosplay shops. I wander around there and still randomly find new doujinshi shops I don't know about. Ikebukuro = hands down best area of Tokyo.

I'm not sure if the replies are from two or three anons, so thank all of you! ♥ Definitely putting all of these places on my to-visit list. :D
