Community Season 4

[personal profile] biohazardgirl 2012-09-19 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
So I just found community like legitimately last weekend and I am watching like every episode (some out of order because I'm lame like that and also the internet kept spoiling me so I was like fuck it I'll watch some season three and also I couldn't find most of season one so yeah. A lot of season two, woohoo!). I love it! I think it's one of the best things I've watched. . .ever ever ever.

I got really excited when I heard that season 4 was coming out in like a month. . .but then apparently the showrunner was fired and a bunch of writers left AND it got moved to the Friday 'show death' slot and it only has 13 episodes. I am legitimately really sad now. Does anyone know anything about these new people that are running it? Is anyone else worried about what might happen to this wonderful thing, or am I side eyeing these decisions too much?

Also, any other Community fans in the house?

Yeah, it sounds pretty disastrous re: season 4. That's all I know, though. I really hope it doesn't get changed/ruined completely because of this. I have a positive outlook on it right now, but I guess we won't know until the episodes air. =[

Still, even if it is terrible, there are 3 seasons to rewatch over and over and just pretend the last one doesn't exist. =P

I'm just sad I found it right now and not, like, last year when all the definitively good show stuff was still going on. I would be less sad, I think, if the show was just over, but I feel like it's going to be really painful to watch if they completely fuck it up, and it's just when I fell in love with it too :(

Mostly I'm kind of ashamed that I'm having this many feelings about a show. . .

Yeah, I know what you mean. I was kind of in the same boat- I hadn't seen all the episodes until after that announcement, I'd only seen season 1 and some of season 2. Then I marathoned it all and felt sad that there wasn't more yet. And also sad that the new episodes could be bad. I just want them to be out already so we can watch and find out once and for all!

Me too!!! The suspense is killing me and I haven't even finished watching all of the episodes yet.

It's just. . .SO GOOD.

But I guess even if it is bad. . .all good things do have to come to an end, and I'm glad that it did exist and that at least three seasons are as good as they are :)

Indeed! I think it's better to try and be as positive about this situation as possible, haha.

Yeah Dan Harmon got fired, but before that even happened we already knew about season 4 being 13 episodes and it's felt like since way back that NBC was giving it the death march.

Like being concerned about whether the next season is good or not isn't even really clicking with me because I'm more worried that this is all we're going to have left. I'll judge the season when I see it, but either way I am going to miss Community so fucking much.

Ugh, why must the best comedies struggle.

Re: Community Season 4

Ehhhhhh. I mean, I kind of find it hard to get upset about it getting moved into a death slot, because I feel like we're lucky to be getting any more Community at all. Fundamentally, it's a show that no one watches. Partially, that's because of the way NBC promoted it; partially, that's because of the way the show is - it's a bizarre, injoke-y, parodic, often frustrating, often brilliant show. It's not the kind of show with mass appeal. And so, I mean, I can't really get mad that it's in a death slot when they would have been totally justified not putting it on the air at all, and instead we're getting another half-season to see the show out. Any more Community feels like a blessing, because the show, by all rights, should already be dead.

I mean, what they did to Harmon seems kind of shitty. But the scheduling is something I find hard to get angry at, because they have every reason in the world to cancel the show. Of course they're going to put it in a shitty time slot - no one watches it, no one's ever going to watch it. What are they supposed to do? Give it another shot in a prime slot so it can fail miserably in the ratings once again?

I'm not so much worried about the scheduling so much as what the scheduling usually means, 'we hate this and we're not sure whether or not we want it gone but we don't want it to die with dignity if we let it die.' I am really grateful that there is more community, but I just feel a bit hesitant about there being new showrunners and writers, etc.

If it's bad I'll probably still watch all 13 episodes anyway. . .

I don't know if it's "hate" so much as a realistic understanding that the show is never going to be a ratings success no matter where it is on the schedule.

I'm pretty worried about the new showrunners too, and whether it'll be the same show. I guess I just feel that whatever we get is gravy, and even if it's utter trash, no one can take away Community seasons 1-3 from us.

I love Community, more with every rewatch.

I was deeply saddened by what they did to Dan Harmon, but from a business model I kinda get it. It's a horrible thing to do still. Community is a show with not a lot of fans. Worse, it's a show with fans who think and interact and are passionate. We complain when something is wrong, we fight for having smart shows on tv, and smart shows don't sell/aren't watched.

So, I'm deeply happy that we had three beautiful seasons. I'm remaining hopeful for the thirteen episodes of season four, though I'm surprised that we will actually get the 13 episodes at all. I honestly don't expect for there to be more episodes after that, but I will watch with dedication in hopes that we will.

It won't be the same show without Dan. But there are many shows that thrived after the dismissal of a showrunner, so I'm determined to hope for the best but prepare for the worst. If anything else, we still have the three beautiful seasons to rewatch whenever we want.

DID YOU SAY COMMUNITY :DDDDDD

The Friday time slot is more of an annoyance that a huge concern for me, but what happened to Harmon really pisses me off. Community is never, ever going to be a hit TV show and new show runners won't change that, so that best option is to please the small but devoted fan base. I accept that the amount of episodes and move to Fridays is a business decision that needed to be made, but firing Harmon is almost like canceling the show. It's his unique voice that makes Community what it is, and Sony and NBC could have decided that all we get was a TV movie aired at a weird hour of the night, and as long as Harmon wrote it I could have dealt with it.

I'm going to be hopeful about this upcoming season being at least good, as some of the writers have stayed on, and obviously the cast is still the same. Though, even if it does turn out to be enjoyable, it still won't be enough :(

But, anyways, what have you seen so far? Favorite episodes/characters/ships/jokes? Yeeeeeey, more Community fans! :D

I heard Harmon had some arguments with writers and cast members and clashed with NBC a bit and that's why he was fired? Idk. I just hope the new showrunners do ok. The actors are excellent so at least the performances will be good, probably. I don't know if the actors would stay on if they thought it would be terrible.

I have seen all of season 2 except for the paintball episodes, scattered episodes of season 3 that count for about a quarter of the season, and one or two episodes of season 1.

Favorite Episodes So Far:

Pillows and Blankets: alkdfjosa perfect episode is perfect. I laughed my ass off. The war documentary spoof is so spot on, it's just so, so funny. PLUS. Troy and Abed :D
"You are children pretending to be adults, and I hope you know that." MY LIFE ALWAYS, JEFF.

Epidemiology: I'm not a huge fan of zombies and I expected not to like this but I LOVED IT. The whole thing where ABBA was playing in the background (as well as the Dean's notes to himself) was brilliant. Also:
"I love you."
"I know."
*dies*

Messianic Myths and Ancient Peoples: ABED AS JESUS :D

Advanced Dungeons and Dragons: It was just so much fun! Also reminded me that I've been wanting to play it for a while. Also, bless you Fat Neil.

Early 21st Century Romanticism: Because everyone is cute and funny and awesome in it.

Remidial Chaos Theory: because wow that's an interesting idea.

Curriculum Unavailable: because again, interesting idea.

Favorite Characters:
I could watch Troy and Abed read the phonebook, I swear to god.

Ships:
Trobed <3 I'm not a usually huge shipper, I really just. . .god I can't help it, I ship them like burning. They're like, married, I swear to god.

Jokes:
-Everything about Abed being Jesus
-That one from the clip show where Abed and Pierce are given examples of their 'longing looks to each other' set to music. Gold.
-ABBA playing along with a zombie attack
-The Dean's outfits. All of them.
-Pierce as Drugs.
-Pretty much everything from Pillows and Blankets
-How seriously everyone treated the death of the yam
-Everything that comes out of John Oliver's mouth
-Other stuff I can't remember.

I basically just relived watching every single moment you mentioned. <3<3<3

I too am a bit sick of zombies and LOVED Epidemiology.

Somehow I read I could watch Troy and Abed read the phonebook, I swear to god.>/i> as "I could watch Tory and Abed cosplay people in the phonebook, I swear to god." and was hit with a pang of I WANNA SEE THAT!

*ahem* you may find it relevant that Donald Glover does great standup (I think a full "Weirdo" is up on youtube) and he starred in a movie "Mystery Team". Definitely worth checking out!

Watching it with crossed fingers. I love the show but am ready to pretend it ended with season 3 (which was a beautiful end, imo).

You already know I am!

I have my ears in my fingers about this whole thing. If worst comes to worst I have plenty of time to cry about it later but for now? "What thing with Dan Harmon?"

Isn't it AMAZING?!?

I honestly think Community has spoiled me for any other TV show. My reaction to TV for years was already "but why does it have to suck so much? How do you even write something so horrible?"… Its possible I got into Teen Wolf because I realised that all television will inevitably dissapoint so why not the fandom with hot dudes everywhere.

If you haven't read Dan Harmon'a AMA on reddit go do it now. It will make you cry in a good way. And a few of the writers left are great, so there's hope. Meghan Ganz wrote the Law & Order episode which was pretty amazing!

I've only got season one under my belt so far, but though I'm sad to hear it's going down the network tubes, in my experience a show can only go a maximum of five seasons without getting really terrible. It'll be a shame if it doesn't get at least a fifth season, but I'm mostly worried about season four ending on a strong note that rounds everything up nicely, just in case another run around the block isn't happening. I'd really hate it if the new writers try to turn its foundations upside down with some silly bullshit in an effort to bring in more viewers.

I forgot to reply to this. D: But seriously, Community is ♥ xINFINITY, I love it that much ;0;

I cried tears of despair (on the inside) when I heard about Dan Harmon being fired because it did seem like it was his vision for the show that made it as unique as it was for the first three seasons. Crossing my fingers that it will be close to how good it was, but I won't keep my hopes up because... well, heartbreaks and all.

The Friday night time slot does not bother me at all. I stay home most friday nights anyway. >_> I'm just worried about the ratings being abysmal so they do end up cancelling the show altogether. I love it too much to let it die okay!

<3 Community.

But let's be honest here. You haven't been watching it weekly, so you don't know, but it's been in this death march for a while. It was off air for 8 weeks last season. I remember very vividly because Community was every Thursday at 8, and I had Climbing League every Thursday. Community was off air literally only when I was at League for 8 weeks.

I'm just going to sit back and see what happens, you know?

But, uh. You know. Just a thought. If you can afford the DVDs, it might be a good idea? I don't know how much tuning in on the day it airs and buying the DVDs helps NBC think it's worthwhile, but I'm willing to do what I can to keep Community on the air.
