Childhood memories that make no sense

[identity profile] emthejedichic.livejournal.com 2012-09-19 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
What are things that happened when you were a kid that maybe made sense to you at the time, but now totally confuse you?

For example: I was at my best friend's house and we were watching a movie when my mom came to pick me up. I asked if I could stay until the end of the movie, but my mom said no. Then my friend's dad put his hand on my shoulder and said "MY daughter wants to stay and finish watching George of the Jungle." My mom agreed and I scampered off, happy to be allowed to stay.

This majorly confuses me to this day. My mom didn't seem offended or anything that my friend's dad was referring to me as his kid. It could be that he was joking around, but he seemed serious to me.

So I think we know who your real dad is.

Maybe he's secretly your genetic dad and your mom didn't want you to find out so just went with his weirdo power play.

Or maybe you're misremembering and he said something like "my daughter wants her to stay." I have all these memories that I thought were weird but when I would finally bring them up to somebody it would always be that I was misremembering and nothing like that ever happened.

Maybe he was baking her favorite cake and she didn't want to share it with you so he made this intricate code to let her know without raising any suspicion
Or maybe your mom really likes George of the Jungle and would have let you stay anyway if she knew THAT was what you were going to watch
Or maybe you're adopted
So many possibilities!

Hah, I am adopted actually. I know who my bio dad is and it's not him... unless it's a REALLY elaborate lie, lol

See, you're narrowing it down already! Like a Sherlock Holmes!

Fun stuff:
Memories aren't like a tape recorder, copying stuff exactly. Your brain tends to "rewrite" it after it happens and add to it. Which is why you have those weird childhood memories that could never have actually happened.
The more you know!

Wow, that's... kind of creepy, actually.

For a while I had a childhood "memory" that my mother's friend brought her grandkids over and one of them fell down the stairs while we were playing a game.

Then later I realized it was a dream that I somehow thought was a memory, because they'd never been to our house.

I guess it was just such a realistic dream that I somehow got mixed up.

This actually explains a lot. I have some really freaking weird childhood memories, and I wouldn't be at all surprised if they happened completely differently from how I remember them.

My friend called all her friends parents mom or dad. We weren't really kids though so I can't say it was a childhood thing.

When I was a kid, I thought the "OJ Trial" was about putting orange juice in jail. And when I saw them pan to the real OJ, I kept wondering why he was so important if we were talking about juice.
