Yeah. The classics sometimes seem to have a different... tone? Style? There's sometimes something that seems off about them. I've noticed this with classic K/S fic too.

Speculation: They are the "founding" fics, when there was less variety and less to choose from quality-wise. They are good enough that they the cement themselves in our minds as classics, but as the fandom/pairing/niche picks up new fans and better writers (or, as the original fans hone their skills), later fics can seem better quality than the "classics."

Totally agree about the "founding" fics thing. And in Snarry especially, every single good fic was a fucking EPIC, so reading 100,000 words of something just exacerbates that slightly "off" feeling.

imho I also think part of it is that most 'classic' fics were written when we had less canon. Harry Potter was pretty tame before the first major deaths in book 5 and the massive bleakness of books 6 and 7. A lot of the fic written before book 5 feels weird because it's too positive and misses small canon elements.

Same goes for classic K/S, I guess? I've seen a few fics that are pretty good but feel weirdly out of step with the general Trekverse because of weird details. Typical example would be fanon names: when Uhura is not N'yota, something doesn't feel right. For Harry Potter, any fic where Blaise Zabini is not a black guy strikes me as "pre-Half-Blood Prince".
