Re: FS, what are you reading right now?

right now I am reading Beyond A Boundary, CLR James: IT IS AMAZING. It's a book about cricket but it's also much more than that (I'm not really a cricket fan, just heard it was a good book) - it's part memoir, part cricket book, and part analysis of the way that sports reflect and take on things from culture and society - in this case, specifically, the way that cricket, for James, was intimately connected to race and class and colonialism growing up in Trinidad.

"I haven't the slightest doubt that the clash of race, caste, and class did not retard but stimulated West Indian cricket. I am equally certain that in those years social and political passions, denied normal outlets, expressed themselves so fiercely in cricket (and other games) precisely because they were games... The British tradition soaked deep into me was that when you entered the sporting arena you left behind you the sordid compromises of everyday existence. Yet for us to do that we would have had to divest ourselves of our skins."

If you are a sports fan, you must read this book as soon as possible. If you're not a sports fan, it's still worth a read.

there's a few other things that I'm reading - my general strategy is to just pick up and put down whatever book I feel like at the given moment, which means there's like 5 or 6 books I could say that I'm 'reading' - but this is the one I'm most jazzed about atm.
