The Long Goodbye, by Raymond Chandler.

The way Chandler handles words and people, with such care and creativity, is something I've rarely found in any book. More so that he created people, more than characters, is something else I'm amazed at.

I really recommend any of Chandler's Marlowe books, but I'd say this is his favorite of mine.
