Ngl I'm not interested in any author that considers "fuckability" a top priority with each character

Ok?
I mean, that shouldn't be the top priority but most of my male characters (not all) are guys similar to ones I've fucked before or guys I'd want to fuck, don't see how this is a problem as long as the character isn't 2-dimensional. There are plenty of male authors who write female characters like this, too, and not so surprising when you realize that people are sexually attracted to certain personality traits, etc. It's not all just physical appearance.

Missing the point much? Your original post implies that people overpopulate their stories with a particular gender because it's the gender they sexually prefer. I replied that I don't consider that very good writing.

Well, I was only speaking for myself really (I just said "women" plural because I know plenty of other women do the same thing, never said that everyone does). I don't get why you think I was speaking for everyone....

Also, you would be very surprised at how many female characters written by men that people think are so great and well-written and fully realized (and sometimes they are) are clearly (usually very thinly-veiled) objects of adoration for the male writer. This happens a lot in comics (Enid in Ghost World for sure)

I don't care if someone writes a character that they personally adore. Again that's beside the point.

The point is I don't believe being attracted to a gender is ever a good excuse to fill your story with that gender. Honestly whenever I come across an author who hardly ever writes female characters I'll just assume they're expressing some level of misogyny. Ladies aren't difficult or unpleasant to write unless you make it so.

I have got to ask: if someone's shtick is primarily writing m/m slash fiction (someone like me, for instance), even though there are female characters in the story despite that main three or four characters are male, would that raise any eyebrows?

(Anonymous) 2012-09-21 07:58 am (UTC)(link)
Um, you just said it. People are generally attracted to certain personality traits, etc. If "most of [your] male characters are similar to ones [you've] fucked" there's going to be less diversity than if this were not true. I want to read about ugly people, beautiful people, egotistical people, self-loathing people, old people, young people, sadistic people, empathetic people, etc... it's doubtful you're into ALL of those types. So it would seem like it would limit your writing. It doesn't offend me. Just seems very limited. It seems odd that you consider most of your male characters fuckable. Look at the world around you. Most people consider a relatively small percentage of the population fuckable. What you've described doesn't correspond to the real world. It may be great for a sex fantasy, but not for realistic drama...
