suicidal ideation

(Anonymous) 2012-09-21 08:13 am (UTC)(link)
I've been thinking about suicide for several years now, and for the last few weeks almost constantly. I don't want to die, I don't plan on going on and killing myself. I just keep thinking of ways I *could* do it if I were to choose to; fastest, easiest, less painful ways; what would happen of my body after...
Now I'm getting rather tired of it but I still can't stop.

I can maybe understand thinking about how to kill yourself as something where just your brain goes there and tries to figure it out like a puzzle. I can also understand imagining how people would react to your death, even if you don't actually want to die. But you say it's been going on constantly and for a long time and you're sick of it. If it's really that pervasive, you might want to get help anyway. Good luck.

I'm sorry that your head is stuck in a weird place.
I think it's a good thing that you recognise it's not something you're really feeling, even if it is on your mind a lot.
I'm not saying you need to see a shrink, but from memory there are some techniques taught in cognitive behaviour therapy that are helpful for addressing negative thinking patterns and fixations.
I hope this gets better for you soon.

thoughts are like clouds. you're there sitting way below on a hill, watching them drift past. they're high up and far away.
you may have those thoughts, but they are not YOU. because you still have free will. you can still DECIDE what to act on. thoughts don't control you, not if you let them.
in the end, they're just clouds drifting by.

Intrusive thoughts.

If you can get to a doctor to tell them about this, do so. Intrusive thoughts can be tiring and annoying, and often upsetting. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy can often help. Medication can often help.
