Yes. Please! Tell us all about him! I must know everything.

Theoretically, there should be nothing scary about a mirror in a darkened room, or a window with the shade up at night, or the space under the bed, but it creeps some people out just the same.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-21 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
The reason WHY it's scary tends to differ from person to person, but some common themes are:

-The facelessness. Human beings are programmed to look for faces, to the point that we'll see them in things that don't have them. So something that has no face where a face should be throws us off guard.
-The distorted proportions. Again, this hits our instinctual "warning buttons" that something is deeply off. It looks human, but not enough to be convincing.
-The silence and apparent lack of communication. There is no way to reason with this being.
-He appears in daylight and can teleport. Nowhere is safe.
-Child abduction. This one is terrifying for anyone who has kids.
-Organ removal.
-Slendersickness. There doesn't appear to be a cure.
-He appears to some people and not others, so if he appeared to you, you would have very few people who would believe you.
-In some of the earlier SA forum posts, slendy appeared as a totally convincing, ordinary human being, and his facelesness could only be viewed on film. Buckets of paranoia fuel.

SA

Also adding:
-Messing with technology. In this age, we rely a LOT on things like mobile phones, cameras, computers, laptops, etc. Slendy renders our sophisticated technology useless.
-Memetic nature. Some have theorized that Slendy is a "tulpa" or "thoughtform" which can manifest into reality if enough people think about him. Even more paranoia fuel.
-Force of nature. In the early days, Slendy was associated with the forest, fire and water. Slenderman itself is practically a force of nature - uncontrollable, unpredictable, unstoppable - and brings back our old fear of these things.

...wow.

So. I knew nothing about Slender Man before seeing this secret. And the first two things you listed (-The facelessness... -The distorted proportions...) didn't bother me at all.

But everything else you've said, and its combination thereof, has seriously creeped the fuck out of me.

Which means I've got to go forth and check this thing out.

I'm gonna leave some recs because I like sharing, okay?

The most popular Slender Vlogs are Marble Hornets, Everyman HYBRID, and Tribe Twelve. They can all be found on Youtube.

For Blogs I'd suggest:
The Tutorial ( http://getuphigh.blogspot.com/2010/06/time-to-sit-down.html )
Seeking Truth ( http://openthedoorandyouwillfindme.blogspot.com/2010/03/assignment.html )
Just Another Fool ( http://jafool.wordpress.com/2009/07/29/this-is-what-happens/ )
Dreams in Darkness (http://dreamsindarkness91.blogspot.com/2010/05/and-life-in-general.html )

If I recall correctly Dreams in Darkness was the only one with a definitive ending when I last read them.

Fabulous, thank you!

No problem!

SA

Also, I'm not the same person that described Slenderman above, I just butted in to leave recs.

Jumping in to say that Marble Hornets is my favourite of them all (although it's sort of the obvious choice). I feel like it's the most engaging, although there are some boring episodes between legitimate scares, and no real conclusive answers as to What The Fuck Is Happening.

He just sounds like a cool Pokemon to me.

I would name mine Fifi and put it in the beauty contest.

But... but you call him Slendy! A creature named Slendy is adorable, it cannot be terrifying.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-22 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
If the "appears normal IRL" idea had stayed, he would terrify me a lot more. Oh god, I think that type of paranoia gets me the most.

It's because he stands there....MENACINGLY!!!!

I think it's more of a psychological horror than anything else. Slenderman is supposed to always watch and he just appears and disappears at will so no place is safe because he will find you. In most series he doesn't directly hurt anyone rather he brainwashes people that he stalks to do his bidding. The scariness of the mythos comes from the fear of being watched or stalked, the fear of not being able to trust people and getting betrayed because of his power over people, and the fear of losing your own will, combined with the fact that technology doesn't work and doesn't help makes for a pretty scary combination for some. You also lose time when you're getting stalked by him. So it's a different sort of scariness I guess.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-22 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
Precisely this.
