If someone was saying "thank god--not that there's such a thing as god, but you catch my drift, right?" out of character, it'd be completely off-topic and worthy of banning. Same thing as "Oh, that's so terrible, I'll pray for you. Tonight. In church. Pray to my god. Me. Pray for you. You should pray too."

If you're saying that there should be a limit for culturally accepted religious talk (Thank God, Oh My God, Hell, etc.), I agree. But if you invoke your own religion or try to force it on others (and telling someone who isn't of your religion that you're going to pray for them is fucking rude), that's not cool.

How is that rude? Honest question here. Especially a generic sentiment like that that doesn't even mention what deity s/he is praying to. It's just the more religious version of "thinking good thoughts" and so on - they're only trying to be supportive in their own way.

DA. There are, basically, two different ways that can be rude

-If the Christian is using "I'll pray for you" as a passive-aggressive way of saying "my religion makes me a better, kinder person than you."

or

-If the person being prayed over has had really negative experiences with religion, and feels anything *but* cared about when someone shoves faith inappropriately at them.

Basically, it's not always rude, but I've seen it used in ways that are very rude, and take full advantage of its looking well-intentioned. (Why are you upset? I was trying to be nice!) And outside of a we-all-share-the-same-faith context, it's kind of presumptuous to assume you're talking to people who only associate positive things with prayer. And not, for instance, the many gay people who remember "I'll pray for you" as the polite cover for "I'm judging the hell out of you, and I don't want to have anything to do with you unless you change."

Many times, a person who says "I'll pray for you" is using it either a) in response to someone doing something with which s/he does not approve or b) as part of an attempt to convert someone. That is not always the case, of course, but when it is, it's both very obvious and very, very rude.
