"Normal" anon from yesterday

(Anonymous) 2012-09-22 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
I'm that anon from yesterday with the crap experiences pushing me to go do dangerous shit.

Thank you, you guys. Your replies really helped and inspired me. Today, as I was walking through campus, I decided to drop in on the Army program folks, and I'm starting to set things up. The captain there seemed dead set that I was a good match for the program, so I'm really stoked.

I feel like I'm headed where I belong. It may not be in the safest of places, but it feels good. I'm glad that there are places in the world that need people like me. Thank you for helping me see that.

Congratulations and good luck!

I'm currently going through enlistment myself (but for a different service) so if you have any questions I might be able to help.

Thanks!

Are you in service, or just getting into the process now? Also, which branch, if I can ask?

Marine Corps (U.S.). I've been "in process" for four years because of family drama but I've put my foot down and will be going by January whether or not my family is ready.

I did take advantage of the time to get some college under my belt so it's not all bad.

I hear you. I've had some experience with the Marines side of things too, in regards to applying, so I can commiserate. I hope it works out for you, and you ship out in Jan.

How's the draw down effecting the need for recruits on that end? Also, what MOS are you getting in with?

I don't know much about the draw down in general, just that my recruiter has assured me it is not something I need to worry about. Perhaps because he has a hard time meeting his female recruit targets?

That's always good to hear. The Army's tightening up pretty drastically over here; OCS is almost gone as an ascension route, so I'm trying with ROTC.

That's a pretty damn legit MOS. With your college, that can translate really well into civilian skills, too. I think it's a good fit, from what I know of you.

I'm hoping to get into 35 or 37, myself. I've got proficiency in a high needs language, so hopefully that will help.

Oh good luck with that!

I'm also hoping to make the Corps my career and from the active-duty servicemembers and vets I talked to generally enlisted is perceived as the more legit route.

That should help for those MOSes. From what I know they're pretty competitive so good luck!
