I really enjoy not being in fandoms where I'm legitimately worried that one of the creators is a suicide risk, while the others dance around claiming that nothing is wrong.

I feel the same. I used to follow some of the reviewers on twitter years ago, including Spoony, but then I unfollowed him and most of the others and this is partially the reason why.

I also agree with your point. The way I see it, ever since they started reviewing stuff, most of them were "playing a character", which meant they were acting differently when reviewing than if they were reviewing the movie as themselves. Nostalgia Critic is the most popular example of this, then there's Cinema Snob, Nostalgia Chick (who, even though she has reviewed some movies as being bad, has admitted that she as a person liked those movies), etc. It seems to me that, yes, their personal opinion on what they review might be that it's bad, but when actually reviewing they are playing a character who sometimes overreacts, etc. to get some laughs out of the audience. Why would they give themselves an alias, such as Nostalgia Critic, Nostalgia Chick, Cinema Snob, etc. if they weren't playing a character? They could use their real names (which we, as fans, already know) when reviewing stuff, but they don't - because they're playing characters, as they themselves have sometimes admitted.

That's why I don't think Doug acts like the Nostalgia Critic when he talks about movies with other people (with all the shouting, etc.), or why I don't think Brad is a snobbish person like the Cinema Snob is - and that applies to every reviewer. True, some of them might not actually be playing a character and might just have an internet alias because everyone has an internet alias, but generally that's how I view the reviewers - and to a certain point that's what the reviewers themselves want me to see them, otherwise they wouldn't be going on and on about how they're playing a character and stuff.

The problem for me is when I know too much about the reviewer as a person and it influences how I see them in their reviews, even if they're playing a character. For example, I've never followed Lupa, but knowing what happened between her and Spoony made the anniversaries a bit awkward to watch for me. Same thing with Spoony - knowing what he's going through makes his reviews a bit weird to watch, for me at least. If I didn't know so much about these people's personal lives, I wouldn't feel weird or awkward watching their videos. I think that's one of the reasons why people stop watching TGWTG or can't be part of the fandom anymore, like OP put it.

Yeah, I'm not even close to being in the fandom and I figured they weren't really playing themselves. Even TV show hosts don't really play themselves.
