I honestly think that is BS, I would not have been exposed to "Sweeney" Todd without Angela Lansbury/George Hern DVD or Into the Woods without the DVD of the OBC. I have since sought out other recordings for both shows, have seen the most recent national tour of "Sweeney Todd" and wish there was a National Tour of "Into the Woods" so I could see it live.

I think it would possibly increase attendance because recordings help build an audience and can create fans of a show without having seen it live.

Also I think it would be good in general, because there will be people who will sadly never be able to see a Broadway show or national tour: due to time constraints, financial constraints, not being lucky enough to live near a tour city, and all of the above. This could give many who would never see the show the chance to see it, even if it is not the same, it can still be pretty damn awesome.
