I hear ya, OP. Artist (with a BFA from A Real Art School, yeesh) trying to make it pro, coming up on, what, five-ish years since graduation now?

That's why that is one of my favorite Weird Al songs. It's hilarious, and at the same time, it's also the most terrifying things ever. (Although I would take "Working at Disney World" over "Working crappy government job" any day, if it came to that.)

On my end, this has been a good year, professionally. And I use this song in my "psyche up" playlist right next to all the "You Can Do It!" type songs exactly because a little bit of fear helps. Embrace the fear, OP, and use it to fuel your desire to do great things. Just don't let it overwhelm you. It's not over until it's over.

Honestly, I really love this song: it's so happy-sounding tune-wise yet freaking depressing lyrics-wise. I actually consider it my favorite Al song, but at the same time I try not to think too much about my own situation when I listen to it. Maybe that's exactly what I ought to be doing, though, like you said, to "use it to fuel your desire to do great things".


Finding a satisfying relationship isn't one of the things that I care about doing and so isn't a thing that depresses me, but recently I like to think that Dan eventually hooks up with his like-minded female coworker in the music video. It cheers me up about his situation a bit, and in turn cheers me up a little, somehow.

Ha. I WAS Skipper Dan, damn it. I have a fine arts degree and ended up working at WDW for the longest time because the economy tanked and I cried and cried when I first heard this song, but it was a kick in the ass and got me out of there.

If I recall correctly, in the music video, near the end, when he rides by the other tour guide, they both do the "shoot me" motion. I like to think that if you imagine that she was Dan's friend and they both kinda have the same "what the hell happened to us" attitude, it makes the song a little less depressing, because at least he's got someone who can emphasize with him rather than being all alone.
