That's happened to me with other actors before. It happens. Sucks for you and I'm sorry.

At least you enjoyed the movie? It bored me so at least you didn't have that problem.

I guess it's good news for you that Mark Ruffalo is taking over, assuming you don't have the same reaction to him.

Me too OP, also I kept expecting him to break into an internal monologue about how Tyler Durden is out to ruin him.

Better than my experience. I didn't bother to watch The Incredible Hulk during my post-Avengers prequel catch-up marathon until after I had already seen Moonrise Kingdom in theaters, and I had...problems.

Everytime I see Edward Norton I either think "Hey! It's Edward Norton!" or "hey! It's that racist from American History X!" never "hey, it's Tyler Durden!"

Clearly I'm doing Edward Norton wrong.

I love Norton but, yeah, he was all wrong for Banner. Ruffalo was perfect. And the difference between the two is vulnerability. Unlike Ruffalo's Banner, Norton's Banner never seemed like a man who has been dragged through the mud. Instead, he came across as street smart, punk on the run who was always ready to run. A fugitive on a 5 hour Energy drip. And Ruffalo seemed less fugitive and more runaway. Like he's not just running away from the authorities but he's running away from The Other guy but at the same time, he is so tired. So completely tired and always on the verge of giving up. And without that vulnerability, the constant fear that the other shoe will drop, Banner isn't Banner.

You put into words exactly how I feel :D

*hugs poor Ruffalo!BruceBanner*

+ infinity, it really comes down to the vibe, which is really important in a character as emotionally-driven as Bruce Banner.

This, this, this. Ugh, I have so many feelings just reading this paragraph. Ruffalo's banner was so perfect in those ways.

Yes, this is how I feel as well.

There also seemed to be a weird disconnect with Norton. I don't know what is was but it bothered me the whole film.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-25 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
This. I had trouble connecting with Norton's Banner. Ruffalo was much easier to sympathize with.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-25 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
THIS. All of it.

I was so surprised when Mark Ruffalo's Banner ended up being my favourite character in the Avengers.

I watched The Incredible Hulk later on... and while I liked Liv Tyler, I felt nothing for Edward Norton. All I could think was: "This needs more Mark Ruffalo."

(Anonymous) 2012-09-25 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
omg this this this this this

I love him visually: he is dead on the physical appearance of comic banner, no lie.

he... doesn't manages any of the emotional vibe, however, needed for the character initially. I mean if you were going to do post world-war-hulk banner, from the most recent issues where he's fucking nuts? Yeah, that's one things... but initial canon banner? nope nope nope

ruffalo got the whole anxiety / ptsd / being super careful shit down pat. The vulnerability and the emotional complexity of a guy who has always been afraid of his own rage and now has twice the reason to be so.

also ruffalo is just plain cuter

This comment is perfect.

I'm like this with Red Dragon. I don't see Will Graham, I just see Edward Norton.... being Edward Norton.
elaminator: (Thor)

I didn't see this until right before Avengers because of bad reviews and a general lack of interest. I actually enjoyed it! It was no Iron Man, but it worked okay for me. Not the sort of movie I'd want to watch over and over again, but still -- it was better than I expected.

But Ruffalo was much better suited for the role imo.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-24 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel like Edward Norton is a "type" actor, to be honest, and his best type tends to be unrepentant and unsympathetic dicks. He makes an excellent villain; I have a hard time seeing him as a hero in any sense of the word, even a hero so messed up as Bruce Banner/the Hulk.

I would've said the same thing a few months ago...and then I saw Moonrise Kingdom ;)

I enjoyed the movie for what it was but I was never sold on Norton being banner I think I pretty much had the same thought process as you going on. :P

(Anonymous) 2012-09-25 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
I couldn't manage to see the characters in either Edward Nortin OR Liv Taylor, and I've liked both of their works before this (The Illusionist, Lord of the Rings). Not to mention Liv whispered almost all of her lines... it's like she was the Hulk Whisperer or something.

Wow until this secret I had no idea that wasn't a problem just for me. I couldn't get into it too much because of that.

That no longer happens with Mark Ruffalo though, thank God.

I have the same thing happen with Jack Nicholson. I thinks he's great in certain roles, but I always think "Jack Nicholson's in a mental hospital," "Jack Nicholson's going to kill his wife with an axe," "Jack Nicholson's going to kill the Batman."

Same thing happened with Mel Gibson after the crazy hit.
