I've seen a let's play of this. It's all atmospheric horror/people acting strangely. I enjoyed the mystery to it.

ngl, the luna games and other creepy (intentionally creepy, not bronies being gross) parts of mlp fandom are my favorites

Depends on the grimdark. Most of it is pure shit and the author trying to "shock" people. And, for teh most part, I can't even stand most of it because it's so....completely NOT what the show is.

I like my colorful, rainbow, friendship spewing show thanks!! It doesn't need to be made ~dark and fucking edgy~

But, Story of the Blanks is one for my favorite little grimdark gems, mostly because I love Ruby and have a bff headcanon with her and Applebloom. That I love seeing Ruby as a late bloomer grown pony instead of a filly like the creators see her as.

Anywho, glad you like the grimdark crap, but I can't take any of it seriously to even try and enjoy it.

This. I like some more grown up themes with my ponies sometimes (I remember a really good story about two of them getting together and not really knowing how to balance that with their friendships, and some of the theories about Applejack's missing parents are interesting) but pointless gore is... pointless.

Might just be that I'm a horror fan, but Cupcakes loses its sting when you can come up with way worse on your own. It's just like... awww, you're so cute, thinking that's scary.

This! Story of the Blanks is one of the few dark things in the fandom which is actually good and makes sense to me. I mean, the use of cutie marks was rather clever in any case. It isn't gory, but it can be pretty scary if you think on the idea. A place cursed- where if you get a cutie mark you think you are cursed instead.

And it makes more sense in their universe as stated. More sense then "Pinkie decides to bake her friends into cupcakes" or "Rainbow Dash and other Pegasi crush foals to make rainbows". (I mean what even.... that last one.) Those are not clever in the slightest. They're just stupid, don't fit at all and gore for the sake of gore.

Most grimdark stuff is utter rubbish in this fandom but there must be some concepts out there other than this game which are actually good and fit?

I hate all of the Grimdark stuff I've seen, since it's just pointless gore, but if it's cutesy-creepy, like a Tim Burton movie, it would interest me. Is "Story of the Blanks" more gorey or more cute-creepy, or something else? I find all of that pointless gore shit gross, and I don't get why someone would make it with characters of such a cheerful show.

It's not gory at all, it's a quick flash game with a very unsettling atmosphere. Grimdark stuff for kid's shows make me roll my eyes (though the Rainbow Factory song is just so damn catchy) but Story of the Blanks works.

Basically Applebloom gets lost following a pony deeper into the Everfree forest. She ends up in this weird happy town full of ponies with now cutie marks. Eventually she finds a skeleton and everything changes. You learn that they killed a pony named Ruby because she had a cutie mark and they saw it as a curse.

That sounds kind of interesting, since it actually plays with ideas from the show. Since people are saying it isn't gory, I think I'm going to check it out!

So I'm the only one that hates Story of the Blanks, then? Exposition, wander around, OH NO GRIMDARK TWIST, wander around, leave forest, end game. Five-star gameplay right there. As a fic, it'd probably work better, but a game requires a different mindset than just a page-turner story.
