don't try this one

it's boring as fuck, the characters don't even meet for the first fifty chapters or so. it's an exercise in pretentiousness

Exercises in pretentiousness are usually the best kinds of fic. Well, those that aren't trying and failing to be overly poetic. But it's usually interesting to see someone trying something different and out-there. For me anyway.

The best kinds of fic for me are short character-driven statement pieces that are sappy, angsty, or both, so pretentiousness just feels like gears grinding on my forehead while I try to get to the part where all the FEEEEELINGS hit me in the gut.

(seriously, I have never understood the appeal of long plotty fanfics.)

This. I don't mind long fics as long as stuff keeps happening to move the plot along and hold my interest, but mostly I prefer to stick to stuff that's short and gets to the point.

uh, some of us LIKE ridiculously long wordy fics. I tend to find short stories boring but I'm not going to tell people to not try them because I don't enjoy.
