Your dolls are horrible and disturbing to look at.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-24 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
And you're making light of an eating disorder and trying to justify slut-shaming. So I still win! :D

(Anonymous) 2012-09-24 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Winning is all you care about? Good to know.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-24 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
When I'm winning at not being an asshole, yes.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-25 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
This is not how you win at not being an asshole. You win at not being an asshole by not getting involved in the argument. What you have done is win at demonstrating-the-other-person-is-an-asshole, but that does not make you any less of an asshole.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-25 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks for your input, but honestly, not saying anything when someone is doing something that is potentially triggering and degrading to women, that's not a time when I feel good about staying out of it.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-25 11:49 am (UTC)(link)
This...sounds really wrong. Forgive me, but it seems like you're implying that, whenever someone sees something that they feel is wrong, they should keep their mouths shut about it. And if they dare to speak up, then they're an asshole.

But perhaps the only thing that made this anon an asshole to you is the fact that they crowed about "winning." I hope that's the case...?

(Anonymous) 2012-09-25 12:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm, pretty much. I wouldn't have called them an asshole if they hadn't said they won at not being an asshole.

I wouldn't have thought they were being an asshole if they hadn't entered the discussion with 'you're a dick'.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-25 12:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Uh, I just realized I entered the discussion with 'you're an asshole'. Well, I guess I didn't think I was being polite...

(Anonymous) 2012-09-25 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Anon you're discussing

Honestly I don't care if you think I'm an asshole, but honestly, somebody said something shitty that actually hurts people a whole bunch of times in this thread and refused to admit it hurt anyone, and I'm the one you're calling an asshole because I used a common rhetorical device on the internet. I think you need to check your priorities. :/

(Anonymous) 2012-09-25 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Ugh, two "honestly"s. Well, I may not be polite, but I'm honest.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-25 06:11 am (UTC)(link)
Slut-shaming =/= commenting on the apparent need for toy producers to sexualize a doll line targeted toward young girls. That is fucking gross. It's not that these clothes are inherently bad or that women who wear them are "sluts" - it's that we're teaching young girls to admire fashion that sexualizes them in a way that's wholly inappropriate for their age.

That's a conversation worth having, but it doesn't change the fact that using a term like 'skank' is slut shamey and sexist, which is what the anons are condemning. Using the term in this context (describing someone's attire) implies that the person believes that you behave a certain way based on how you dress, and that there's something wrong with behaving that way. Skank generally means filthy, dirty and vulgar and is typically used against women and girls who are viewed as too sexually available/active. It is a sexist term, and using it totally distracts from an otherwise legitimate viewpoint. IMHO.

When everyone who's complaining in this thread starts telling every high school girl in every anime set in high school to wear longer skirts, then I'll feel like your argument about age appropriateness has some validity. But these characters are explicitly sixteen year olds at a fantasy high school, and I don't think they're dressed more provocatively than any other sixteen year olds in most media. My Sailor Moon doll showed more leg than any of the MH dolls.
