CGI Does not Age Well

someone mentioned this on tumblr and I wanted to see just how bad it looked.

So, citizens of F!S, the original Jimmy Neutron pilot;

I wonder what year this was, because even Toy Story doesn't look this dated.

To be fair, Toy Story had a pretty big budget, I think, and Jimmy Neutron was a TV show so I imagine it had a much smaller budget.

That being said that's one of the many reasons why I prefer traditional animation (although sometimes that can look dated, too, and current CGI is getting much better).

In general, I think a lot of 90s cartoons haven't aged well. I cringed when TeenNick brought Doug back--I couldn't watch it.

Specifically, this and Reboot look primitive these days, yikes.

Yeah, I rewatched a bit of ReBoot a few weeks back out of nostalgia, and... yeah. It's. Not great-looking, now.

I like the comparisons of TF:Prime and Beast Wars that I've seen around. CGI has evolved so much since the 90s.

A fact well known to anyone who's gone back and watched Babylon 5.

Great show, but the CGI looks pretty terrible from our current vantage point.

From what I can remember of of JN- the actual show, even in the beginning, had better CGI than that. The pilot might have had a much smaller budget.
If not, my younger mind must have been easily impressed.

I recall the faces being much more fluid. Idk about the rest, but the pilot was more stiff than I remember.

I recently rewatched a good chunk of Jimmy Neutron, and the actual show itself looks pretty good, especially considering the time period. I agree that the pilot looks very dated though. I remember when I was a kid though being impressed that a show like that existed at all because wasn't that the first computer animated one or something? At least as far as I can remember it was.

I love going back and watching the pilot episodes of older cartoons. It's like rereading the first story arc of a long-running webcomic.

Man, Jimmy Neutron did not age well at all. Then again, what did? I remember I loved Storm Hawks when it was running, but... I don't think I would look upon it too kindly sans nostalgia goggles.

Have you rewatched the actual show recently though? I did last year and I thought it aged pretty well but ymmv. The animation in this pilot though is very dated.

ReBoot was also the first fully-CG series, well, ever, and the guys who animated it had to write a fair amount of new software in order to do so. I think it still looks better than some hand-drawn cartoons of the time, but I might be biased because I love it to bits.

Yikes.
I'm not sure if it's nostalgia glasses but I've seen Starship Troopers: Roughnecks recently and I think it still looks pretty good. At least the bugs do.
