Well, there was a time when a lot of female characters WERE useless Mary Sues or waste of space. But that's not because they were female and OMG we as viewers all hate women! It's because they were written as fairly useless, Mary Sue wastes of space.

And I refuse to feel bad for thinking that because I share genders. And before anyone say "But you should blame the WRITER NOT THE CHARACTERS!!" I say, I can blame both just fine, thanks.

What about the fact that The Characters are fictional?

How does "blaming the characters" even make coherent sense if The Characters aren't real?

Because I am capable of enjoying/discussing a work as an entity unto itself, and viewing the characters as real people within the universe that they inhabit.

Now, does that also mean I can't look it as a work of fiction created by people and judge it on those merits? No. I can do both. Sometimes I feel like doing one or the other.
