Well it doesn't help that a lot of times writers leave the female character as "the chick" and don't bother making her as interesting as the male characters.

While I do believe this is a valid point, I think it's a bit overstated -- there are plenty of boring-ass flat male characters that girls are aaaall over.

But in that case it's really just about sex appeal. And again, in this case, I believe the "omg sexism" thing is overstated. Sometimes it's just about hot guy. A lot of the time, really.
