The first popular incarnation of the pair where one of them isn't a male.
How coincidental.

I don't discriminate between slash and het, in fact I probably ship more het than slash - and to be fair, I haven't seen the Cumberbatch one. However, most of the ones I have seen (and that includes Great Mouse Detective) just seem to have great chemistry and slashy undertones between those two.

Go figure.

Asshole. You don't know them and they don't owe you an explanation for their ships. Besides, a big part of the reason that people ship slash ships is because there are so few canon same-sex pairings in (at least Western) works. So go to a corner and cry if you don't like it.

If you honestly don't think there's misogyny behind at least a portion of slash shipping, you are wrong.

(and yes I slash)

True, but I think that a lot of the desire for this Holmes/Watson to remain platonic is the desire to see more good male/female platonic interaction, and not wanting her out of the way to make room for an unknown male character.

OP. And yes I want to see more platonic male/female pairings. And assuming that just because someone ships slash pairings means they don't ship het is silly. My biggest ships are Vegeta/Bulma (old school baby), Buffy/Spike, Dean/Cas, and John/Sherlock.

And I don't ship every two hot guys I see together. RDJSherlock/JLWatson do nothing for me.

Yeah, their chemistry is amazing in the pilot but I refuse to ship it simply because there's so damned few male/female platonic friendship in mainstream media. That doesn't automatically make me a misogynist.

"THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS", DAMMIT.

It's fucking canon. And now as a general request to the universe/powers that be: I would like a dvd release with the grocery store scene restored, please. We SAW it when it first aired. It's in the teleplay (and the stage play? IDK, I've never seen that script for sale, I don't know if it was ever published?). People remember this scene. Where did it go?!

Heh, I didn't know about that one.
