ATTENTION FANFIC HOARDERS

(Anonymous) 2012-09-25 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you, like me, have massive folders of saved fanfiction on your hard drive? Do you despair of ever getting your fic organized? WELL HAVE I GOT A SOLUTION FOR YOU!!!

INTRODUCING CALIBRE!
http://calibre-ebook.com/

organize your ebooks (aka filthy smut) in any way you want! Create your own tags, categories, and subcategories! Convert your PDF to MOBI or EPUB for use on your e-reader, or convert to plain text or rich text to save space! DO ANYTHING YOU WANT AND MAKE YOUR FANFIC LIBRARY BEAUTIFUL!

(I'm aware many, if not most of you are aware of this program. But I just spent an orgasmic 5~6 hours tagging, categorizing, and rating my massive fanfic collection, and I had to share this amazing thing with everyone.)

I just got a Kindle for my birthday... if I can get my fandom's light novels to read properly on it and can use the Kindle's full set of features on it... oh man.

I fucking love this. I found it last year and omg it is perfect. Perfect for cozying up in bed with a nice fic or taking one on the plane or a long car ride or camping or whatever. When I first discovered it I lost a day categorizing and converting fic to MOBI.

Calibre is amazing. I used it to rename all my ebook file names to add the genre in front because my Kindle FIre does not allow sorting by genre and also to put in the titles of things like fanfics that didn't properly title when I saved them.

Calibre is a god send. For books and fic. And when reading on my phone (android) I use the app Aldiko. Calibre is so awesome that it can send books to your device
There's also an add on for Calibre that imports fic from fanfiction.net or ao3 straight into calibre.

I am the original anon, and I did not know about the addons! :O

How do you get them?

Not the anon that you replied to, but the easiest way is to start Calibre, go to Preferences, and then under Advanced at the bottom of the window Plugins. Then at the bottom of the next window "Get New Plugins" and look for FanFiction Downloader.

I also like Count Pages, which requires a custom column or two (one for page count, one for word count). It's a handy way to see how long a story is before I put it on my Kindle.

I like the Generate Cover plugin too, and FFD can be set up to call both Count Pages and Generate Cover so that your newly downloaded stories can be automatically counted and covered if you like.

There's a list of supported sites for FFD here and the folks that make it are super active and fast to tweak things to fix whatever the latest change of a site (often fanficton.net) breaks.

(Different Anon)

Thank you for this! I have calibre already, but had no idea that it had this function. Now my life just got 10x more easier. :D

And if your hoard is bookmarks, there is a plugin for Calibre called, suprise, FanFiction Downloader. The list of supported sites is rather huge and it will take those URLs and download and package those fics into nice little ebooks.

If you are a Kindle user it's recommended to download into epub then let Calibre convert it to mobi rather than downloading direct to mobi, you get a nicer format that way. Also, the plugin can update epub versions but not the mobi, so you can get incomplete stories and update them as new chapters are posted.

I don't have a fic collection but I have quite an ebook collection and Calibre is AMAZING.
