i absolutely love things with an atypical number of legs, like 3 or 5. or creatures that are missing senses that we think of as mandatory (creatures without eyes, for instance). or shit, species that break the male/female standard. the more complex and confusing the reproductive cycle, the better.
i spend a lot of my free time dreaming up aliens, i'll admit that right now.

Want to help me? I've got aliens whose reproductive cycle is basically the boring mammalian one plus egg-laying. It won't really come up in the story proper, so... any wild suggestions?

my fallback that i've used for at least two species is to take familiar reproduction (sperm + egg = zygote and we go from there) and stretch it out. i tend to split the role of "female" into two different parts, until you're left with one sex that produces sperm and mates with another sex that produces eggs. this second sex mates with a third one (oviposition involved?) that gestates/births the resulting zygote. in the end you get a linear scenario (A with B, B with C, but nothing resulting from A with C).
when in doubt, toss in a few middlemen into the equation. you could probably make the sequence even longer if you really put your mind to it.

there's also xenomorph-style life cycle (explained here because i dont feel like writing that all out) where there's numerous larval/premature stages before your organism reaches adulthood.

if you really want to go for chaotic and confusing, you could impliment a multi-gendered copulation scenario, followed by a bizarre xenomorph-like life cycle. no one ever said life was going to be easy. or pretty.
