Have you ever read a fanfic that turned you off a pairing?

[personal profile] intrigueing 2012-09-26 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
Does this happen to people a lot? I've heard more than a handful of different people mention that they've read a fanfic or a genre of fanfic which totally ruined a pairing for them. And the first time someone said this I scoffed because what, it's just a fanfic, how can it ruin a pairing for you? But it seems quite a few people at least have had this happen so...has a fanfic ever ruined a pairing for you, and how?

Yes. Usually it's a pretty rare pair though. The one I'm thinking of pretty much characterized one of the guys as really young sounding and immature (like 12 or something). Now I don't even want to try it anymore.

I very nearly got turn off one pairing by this fic where the older, POV character spent the entire time calling his 20-year-old lover "boy" in every goddamn sentence. The pedo vibes were incredible for something where both characters were of age.

Re: Your dirtiest secret kinks that you can never find in fanfic

Yeah, there's this one fic that's pretty well known in my fandom that portrayed one of my favorite characters as... well, it probably was supposed to just be "creepy and dominant" but it screamed pedo to me. I don't think anyone else took on the pairing, but I'm not sure I'd want to read it if someone did. The fic was BRILLIANT and mindfucky, but what it did to a favorite character of mine kind of icked me out for a while, because I wasn't expecting to think of him as pedo-ish and did not like that mental image, as wonderfully dark as the fic was.

Probably wouldn't make me actively avoid, but I might ask someone "How similar is this to __________, if at all?" before diving in.

Was it Transformers? Because I can't think of a fic like that...but I usually don't read darkfic so wtf do I know lol

I can't remember the fic's name, something like Swindle's Log. It's BRILLIANT, and the pedo-vibe is probably just me and supposed to just be "creepy power dynamic" vibe with a size kink tacked on, but I couldn't stop feeling squicked because of the associations my mind made. I don't, apparently, like pedo-seeming Shockwaves.

It's weird how uber-dominant manly-man characterizations so often come out as borderline pedo...and abusive. Pedo-man was really cruel to his partner, presumably to show that he was conflicted with sleeping with him. I was just like...ooookay. He feels bad about sleeping with the consenting adult that he consistently refers to as boy, so he takes it out on him. I am so not rooting for this pairing.

Uh. Sort of? I read one fic that was everything I ever wanted wrt my OTP, and now I can't read anything that has a different interpretation of said OTP. Which is like, every other fic in the fandom.

Maybe pairings that I casually shipped or was attempting to get interested in, though I can't really think of any.

Reading a crap fic for my main pairings would just make me hit the back button to find something better.

Never a single fic. My headcannon prevails every time. But it will happen after prolonged exposure to upsetting interpretations of the pair.

Yeah, I'm starting to seriously dislike movieverse Steve/Tony after being exposed to fifty million fics where Steve treats Tony like a child and "teaches" him the "right" way to live and talk and think and feel and act and Tony just clings and fawns spinelessly all over him and has no self-esteem or will of his own whatsoever and tries to kill himself or completely self-destructs if he thinks Steve's disappointed in him.

Seriously. Steve/Tony is one of my oldest ships and what the mess that was Civil War didn't manage is happening right now with the pairing in Avengers fandom...just goddamn. Why.

That only really happens to me when it's a pairing I'd been considering dabbling in, and the first fic I read is bad? Like, once in a while I'll go, hey, maybe I'm not really squicked by all age gap incest, let's try this fic out- OH GOD STOP TALKING ABOUT HOW CHANGING HER DIAPER MADE YOU WANT TO BANG HER!

Ocasionally bad tie-in media will "ruin" the source for me for a bit though, if that counts.

+1 When I was younger actually examining the dynamics of my fandom's golden pairing grossed me out in one instance.
