That guy looks like a dork. Is that what his star chart says?

Not "looks like" a dork. He IS a dork.

(He's a pretty adorable one though).

TBH, I did it too when I was much younger.

Ohhhh....

(Anonymous) 2012-09-26 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
He's an Aquarius?

I always thought he was more of a Pisces.

Re: Ohhhh....

(Anonymous) 2012-09-26 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Curious, what makes you thought he was a Pisces?

Re: Ohhhh....

(Anonymous) 2012-09-27 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know him personally, he seems to have buckets of imagination, emotion, and moods. I thought he was a classic Pisces.

His birthday's in the first half of February, so he misses Pisces by a couple of weeks, but he does seem a little bit Piscean, yeah.

Don't you need the exact time of birth to be really accurate? (Sounds like a cute idea tho~)

(Anonymous) 2012-09-27 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
Not the OP, but yes, you do. Some astrologers have already done star charts for celebrities, so if you can find one of those (usually as a sample to demonstrate what you'll get when you purchase your own), birth times are often available.

Star signs are vague enough to do that. Better to try and guess what star sign someone is before you look them up, see how accurate you can be.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-27 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
Not nearly as silly as thinking that star charts and astrology have the ability to predict someone's personality.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-27 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
If your only exposure to astrology is through what's found in the newspaper, I can understand your skepticism. But using an actual star chart with a birthtime yields far more personalized results -- and, yeah, they actually tend to be pretty accurate.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-27 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously, no. Astrology is a made up thing that is not really real (), just like telling fortunes is not real and there is no Tooth Fairy.

If star charts and horoscope predictions "pretty accurate", that would be a combination of:

1) Using incredibly general statements or predictions that would apply to an extremely wide number of people ("You can often be your own worst critic", "You enjoy being social sometimes, but at other times you require solitude to recharge", etc. etc.)
2) People broadening and twisting the interpretation of the prediction to make it fit. ("My horoscope said I'd go on a long journey across the water, and sure enough, today there was a traffic jam and my detour took me over a bridge!")
3) People remember the "hits" and forgetting the misses.

But the easiest way to tell that astrology is nonsense is just by examining what it claims-- that the position of planets and other heavenly bodies somehow (just how, is a bit vague!) influences your life. It's not you, your free will, your immediate surroundings, your family, and a million other tangible factors that influence your personality and future, it's stars and planets.

Yup, sounds legit.

But I had a lot of fun looking up stuff like this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cold_reading#The_rainbow_ruse

(Anonymous) 2012-09-27 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
Oh bless, people really do believe that random configurations of flaming nuclear balls of gas light years away have the ability to influence their genetics and upbringing.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-27 07:15 am (UTC)(link)
You...sincerely believe a bunch of floating balls of gas burning billions of miles away have any influence on your personality?

(Anonymous) 2012-09-27 11:49 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, you sound so young.

Don't worry, you'll most likely grow out of this.
