Oh, Lana del Ray. I cannot stand her music (especially that godawful Video Games song), and there's something about her face--either the way she does her makeup or the plastic surgery she's had done--that makes me so uncomfortable when I look at her. I do not understand her popularity online.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who found Videogames to be a horrible mess. It's the only song of hers I really know, but most people I've discussed it with like it and I just find it hideously cringey. (Also yes, there is...something instinctively unnerving about her face, now that you mention it. Cannot unsee...)

Lana Del Rey sings catchy pop songs. I think it's pretty clear why she has a following.

I usually feel iffy when it comes to really obvious plastic surgery on people, but when it comes to Lana it seems to fit this glamourous and slightly exaggerated persona she wants to project to the public. I've seen a few pictures of her pre-surgery and she looked a lot like one of those blonde teen pop stars from the '90s -- sweet, sporty and wholesome-looking. I think it took an image makeover that really fit the kind of songs she was making for people to finally notice her. I have a feeling it was a calculated business move on her part.

The few songs of hers I've heard haven't seemed terribly catchy to me, which is why I don't really get her popularity. What I've heard has been bad, much like Taylor Swift's "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" and Maroon 5's "Payphone", but not incessantly catchy where they get stuck in your head on repeat to the point that you find yourself singing along even though the music is like nails on a chalkboard, which I find to be the defining features of the two songs I just mentioned. I don't know. Different strokes for different folks. As long as I don't have to hear her often on my radio (which thankfully, I haven't), then I'm good.

As for the plastic surgery, I can see what you're saying about the look fitting the personality (I remember reading that she had failed in the music industry before her makeover and reemerging in the public eye as a 'self-made' indie artist on YouTube or something), but I get this horrible feeling of looking into the Uncanny Valley when I see pictures/video of her, which is quite the opposite of glamorous (or perhaps old Hollywood?) to me. People seem to like it though, so more power to her, I guess.

I'm kinda with you on the Uncanny Valley thing. I feel like her looks sits on the borderline of human-like and grotesque, but I'm not completely rejecting it like the way I feel about Amanda Lepore, or the women on those Real Housewives shows.
