tl;dr i know lol
(Anonymous) 2007-08-18 12:03 pm (UTC)(link)It was illegal when they began scanning and translating the series in the first place, just because it gets licensed in the U.S. doesn't make it any less illegal. They say their hope is to get people into the series so that when it IS licensed they go out and buy the book, but I honestly doubt that whether or not they drop it has any effect on who will and who won't. People who download illegal media usually decide whether they will or not based on how much they want to support the artist. Like me? I buy all the Japanese versions, even though I get it for free in English online. Books don't use batteries, you are quite correct. And I enjoy having the originals in my hands, not some poorly edited, cheaply made book. Ever wondered why American mangas are bigger in format and don't have dust jackets? ;P
But then...I live near a Japanese bookstore which I know is something not a lot of people have access to in the states. Borders and B&E sell Japanese versions of certain titles now, but they're even more retardedly expensive than the English! $12.00 when you can get it at Kino for $5.50. It's a rip off.
P.S. Fandom will NEVER revert to the "stone age." Get a fucking clue. The internet isn't what is was back in the early 90s. Today's internet has made illegal media piracy EASY. Whether American manga companies live or die will not stop people from subtitling anime or scanlating manga or uploading any number of illegal CD/DVD/theatre/software rips. One site may get shut down yeah, but ten more will pop up to take it's place.
Re: tl;dr i know lol
"Get a fucking clue" Thanks. My clue is that you're someone not to take seriously since you seem to be so wrapped up in fandom la-la land. Makes me a bigger person for not needing to curse asides from not needing to hide myself under anonymous.
It's still a cycle despite what you say, and more to it than what you say as well.
I would have taken your reply more seriously if you hadn't bothered to go swearing and hiding under no name. Byee~~

(Anonymous) 2007-08-18 02:12 pm (UTC)(link)Of course there's more to the issue than what I say. How can I possibly include every individual's reasons for buying/not buying licensed English manga? I believe my generalizations to be correct though, and I will stand by them.
I also personally enjoy swearing; sometimes there's just no better way to capture the emotion of something without a swear word in front of it...but like all things, I do it in moderation. You're one of those twits who think its a sign of sub par intelligence I bet. Oh yes, I can almost hear your eyes rolling in your head. :)
