I think I'll wait and see, honestly. The designs for Strange Journey were quirky and great, but the game was... not. It's possible the somewhat lamer designs (IA with you on that) will make for a great game even so.

Shame this'll be the first SMT game I don't buy at launch, though. I'll wait until it comes out on the PSN.

I have to say I'm extremely disappointed so far. I loved Nocturne to death and many others in the Megaten franchise as a whole, so I had been looking forward to SMT IV for quite some time. And now, just... blech. I hate the character designs the most; too "generic anime" looking to me. (Why yes, I *am* a butthurt Kaneko fan.)

Throw in the fact that it's for the 3DS and not for consoles and, yeah. I think I might be skipping this one.

I really like the demon designs, but then I might be biased because Nirasawa designed some awesome Kamen Rider monsters. They do remind me of Worms a bit...

Honestly I haven't seen anything so far I don't like, and a lot I LOVE (press turns my precious) but I probably wont ever get to play it because it's on the 3DS. :/

Oh wow really! My first impression actually was that these demons looked really tokusatsu-esque. Makes sense now.

I miss Kaneko, but at the same time I don't really mind the designs, at least for the demons. I agree on the characters feeling generic though.

Also: Not sure how this is a spoiler. The game's not even out in Japan for, oh, many months...

I haven't seen the designs before this, but I kinda agree with you.
The monsters look... bleh.
I don't have much experience in the main SMT franchise (I play more Persona) but I remember the monsters used to give me a mix between an eerie feeling and "oh that looks cool" feeling.
The new one? Nothing.

It's an ensemble of several designers, but give Keita Amemiya at least a chance--he rarely lets me down. He did Zeiram and Garo and he does beautiful work. Look up Kiba Crow, too, if you can find scans and want gorgeous mixed-media stuff.
