We have to respect what Hulk wants too. And Hulk does not want to die.

Puny, selfish Banner.

Hulk still hasn't been to Vegas. Wants to see Celine Dion.

But, yeah, I agree. Also, if Hulk is a part of Banner, his id in giant form, then deep down, Banner doesn't want to die either. He just wants the pain to stop.

Now I'm imagining the Hulk doing the Hulkquivalent of a "Stop! You have so much to live for!" by taking Bruce to some really gorgeous paradise full of flowers and beaches and shit after the anti-suicide-Hulk out.

And after Bruce wakes up he glares around and gets a sneaking suspicion...but then sticks his fingers in his ears and goes "lalalalala it's just a coincidence FUCK YOU and the gamma rays you rode in on". Because he was soooooooo in categorical denial about everything Hulk-related during TIH.

....and the gamma rays you rode in on!

brb loling forever

But if Hulk did want to die, Hulk would be out of luck.

Actually, no. in Hulk, the end, we see what happens when hulk finally got everything he wanted... At the end of the world, Bruce Banner died, his heart failed, so he turned, but even as Hulk emerged he knew he was it different this time. Hulk was the only one left. Finally alone.

And with that... nothing to be angry about anymore...

Jeezus. Frankenstein, anyone?! It's very compelling, though.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-29 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, I'm sorry, but that doesn't seem positive to me. Just because your base instinct doesn't want you to die doesn't mean that your own choices about your life should be disregarded.

Example-- I'm teetering on the brink of a fall, and I kick to maintain balance and get away from the edge. Is that smart? Sure, if that weren't a hypnogogic jerk in my sleep that has been programmed into humanity to prevent us from falling from great heights, even though I'm actually asleep and dreaming of falling.

Just because your self preservation says "Live," doesn't mean that should over ride your own choices.

I'm much like OP, and I've sort of taken the thought of suicide as a comfort- if it gets so bad that living is a joke- I can leave if I want to.

Please don't undermine OP's choices.

I'd disagree here. If your base instinct to live overwhelms your desire to die... that's you trying to tell yourself something and you need to fucking listen.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-29 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
You sound like someone who's never been in a position where that point is salient.

If someone wants to die, that's their own fucking choice, no matter how many evolutionary tics human bodies have developed to stave off death. Just because the natural state of the body is to fight and live, doesn't mean that it should overrule people's decision.

If your life is so horrible that living it is more painful to you than not living it, it should be your choice whether or not you want to keep living it.

Look, I'm not just saying to give up, or that dying is an acceptable choice in all situations. I'm all for fighting just because I have the capacity left in my body to fight.

I have been in situations where I could have been left so hurt or crippled that I couldn't have made a full recovery, where my body couldn't have survived unless outside interference kept me living. I wouldn't have wanted to survive without being able to live my life fully, and I would have wanted people to respect my decision.

This is essentially how I'm seeing Bruce. The Hulk is sort of the representation of everyone's Id, but it's to the extreme. Bruce is essentially in the situation of not being able to make choices about his own life, because his base instinct is so overpowered that it makes him keep living, in spite of his own desire.

It's like human's response to keep someone living through medical technology. We've advanced to the degree that we can keep someone's physical body alive in spite of massive amounts of damage and pain. That's not necessarily the best option, though.

Your use of Freudian psychology terms makes me angry for no goddamn reason except that I hate Freud like burning. Fuck Freud. And you.

I mean, hey, I almost agree with your points, except that I don't because I think that suicide is the cruelest single action that anyone can do, but fuck Freud with all the disease-ridden penises in the world. Twice.

As a psych major, you gotta keep some things in perspective. Yes, Frued said a lot of cocaine fueled bullshit, but the magnitude of bullshit in the fiend before her were significant and "hey, lets talk about your dreams and problems, cause there might be an unconscious thought process you aren't fully aware of" were still heads and tails above "lets remove your ovaries and/or drill a hole in your head and see if those help"

I think he'd like that, actually.

Going back to the hulk here however, if we are going off Frued's teachings despite the the Anon below, then this would be a case where not only if your unconscious mind telling you yes, you do want to live, but, if we stay on the comics, Bruce's superego is arguing the same thing on the other end (Professor Hulk never offed himself either.)

So yes. In a more realistic example, if you put a gun to your head and find you can't pull the trigger... THINK ABOUT WHY YOU CAN'T. You might not be as done as you think.

Gotta disagree. Your body tries to live regardless of your desires. If your "base instincts overwhelming your desire to live" actually meant something, you could strangle yourself or suffocate yourself or give yourself a heart attack if you really wanted to die. Knee-jerk instincts to avoid injury aren't that different from inhaling when you lose consciousness.

I mean, there's a reason that scene in Revenge of the Sith where Padme dies because "she lacked the will to live" is bullshit. Because people don't up and die all of a sudden because they lack the will to live. Their body keeps kicking for ages until it's finally overwhelmed by other factors like refusing to eat, heart troubles, etc.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-29 08:50 am (UTC)(link)
There is an actual effect where a "broken heart" leads to a heart attack. Really weird, generally comes up in cases like old married couples where one has died and the other suddenly has a heart attack.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking of after I wrote about not eating...

Some people hear they have cancer and are dead within 2 years when they were projected for 5. Some never find out about it till they are grey and on the operating table. Sometimes it works the opposite way, because the person who knows has to fight it. Sometimes the person decides to end it themselves, and I think cureless painful death being imminent is the only circumstance where I approve euthanasia thus far.

But I think those automatic responses arent always positive. Our brain is part of our body, and they are pretty interconnected. You can feel pain for purely emotional reasons.

At any rate, I wouldn't ignore or discount the fact that sometimes part of you is arguing for life.
intrigueing: (Default)

[personal profile] intrigueing 2012-09-30 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
Well, part of you arguing for life is significant, sure, but that doesn't make having your conscious choices overridden any less of a terrifying prospect. If your body tells you "oh hey, you don't actually want to die", your response isn't going to "oh that's awesome! I apparently don't want to die and my life must be okay and I'm gonna try to be happy now!" Your response will be "FUCK YOU".

(Anonymous) 2012-09-29 04:35 am (UTC)(link)
Not really. The best analogy I've ever seen went something along the lines of - the human body is like a machine. A very complex, very well built, and run machine that's programed to automatically try to stay alive. It's part of the reason certain forms of suicide actually are harder than they're usually let on to be [at least, in most forms of media].

However, what you're body is automatically 'programed' to do, doesn't always match up with what the person wants. A person could try to commit suicide because there in a lot of physical and/or emotional pain - but their physical body is still going to fight to survive because that's part of what it's designed to do, and it's no something you have conscious control over. So it's not a ~secret desire to live~ that's fighting against you - it's just plain evolution.

Since I can't tell if you've ever been in a position where you were suicidal, but to help put it in prospective if you haven't, there *is* a reason a lot of people who've survived being suicidal/failed suicide attempts are diagnosed with PTSD.

[personal profile] insanenoodlyguy 2012-09-29 04:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. THEY TRIED TO KILL THEMSELVES AND DIDN'T LIKE IT.

And Ptsd? THAT'S YOUR OWN BRAIN. WHICH IS TRYING TO TELL YOU SOMETHING.

If part of you wants to live, that's significant. I stand by what I said.
