HE'S EVERYWHERE

(Anonymous) 2012-09-28 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Holy fuckballs, that Mark Watches guy will not go away. Now he's plastering his schtick all over video games (http://www.kotaku.com.au/2012/09/the-one-man-left-in-the-world-who-hasnt-heard-portal-spoilers-plays-portal/#comment-812904).

Yea yea, I'm just jealous. And tired of seeing this guy everywhere I turn.

I have never watched or read any of his stuff, but I find it hard to believe that he's never been spoiled for all of the stuff he claims he has.

Re: HE'S EVERYWHERE

(Anonymous) 2012-09-29 06:36 pm (UTC)(link)
This. His comments on Buffy are too good not to be spoiled. He always says exactly the right thing to bring on a response of "If only you knew what was coming!"

I read a few of his "Watches/Reads" whatnot, and they're pretty entertaining to me personally...then he just started reviewing things I didn't care for.

Why he was singled out to get an article about it I can understand because of his popularity, while also going "Does anyone care?"

Well, it's Kotaku.

(Also wtf, I don't think I've actually been spoiled for Portal, he's not the only... oh right, not a man, and that's what counts. Joy.)

Ahh see now, that's more the F!S spirit! We hate particular peoples here! Rock it girl! It's a much better feel for you.

Man, I've generally been backsliding in my attempts to not feel bad about being banned from his places. (I still wish I didn't care so much.) I'm not sure if this news makes me feel worse or better. So I'm going to go with better, because now his popularity is just getting obnoxious.

(But sometimes I wish I could string together stream-on-consciousness CAPSLOCK SQUEE interspersed with tragic tales of tragedy and garner insta-internet fame.)

Re: HE'S EVERYWHERE

(Anonymous) 2012-09-28 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I hate it when I care about stupid things that I think I shouldn't care about. Which is why I get pissed when people are all "just ignore them!" about bullies and whatever.

Re: HE'S EVERYWHERE

(Anonymous) 2012-09-28 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
If you don't like him -- as you obviously don't -- why feel bad about it?

Re: HE'S EVERYWHERE

I said the exact same thing (here, no less) when I couldn't figure out why I felt so bad.

The answer? Because it hurts to be shunned and treated like you're this horrible, awful person and given no option to defend yourself or to make amends. And it hurts even worse when it's coming from a community you liked being a part of. In short, I didn't always dislike him or his mods -- but even though I do now -- I still miss the other members of the community and being able to have a voice.

I was pissed the first time I got banned (it was for an equally shitty reason).

I think the biggest thing that bugs me is having somebody else get the last word that way. Especially if it was some stupid shit. But you can't refute it, you aren't there anymore! Eventually, I just reduced it to a "meh."

But look at it this way: You were sucked into some stupid shit, and now you are free of that same stupid shit! Your out! The vortex 's event horrizon has been cleared, letting you find ways to waste your time that are less drama laden. Like here! :D

+1 I liked him for a while because when I was like fifteen I thought his whole "omgz guys twilight is awful" thing was funny, and I stuck with him through a lot of Harry Potter, but now that I'm older and I've read much more coherent, well written, and generally better reviews and squees that still managed to be funny I kind of. . .grew out of him? YOUR BLOG IS A COMMENT SECTION SHOUTED TO THE MASSES WHY ARE YOU FAMOUS ENOUGH TO GET INVITED TO SPEAK AT LEAKYCON.

Also when I used to visit his site he wasn't such an SJW but now, jeez.

ALSO What is with him doing video reviews now? I was kind of psyched that someone was reading The Shoebox Project but then he was reading it out loud and it was fucking weird.

Yeah, I remember when his responses to new Harry Potter chapters actually seemed organic and not like he was putting them through some kind of squee filter. And I really lost a lot of "feels" for him after he had finished the series and was still being a dick to Draco fans in the comments.

omg I forgot about Leakycon. HEY HARRY POTTER FANDOM, INVITE ME TO SPEAK AT A CONVENTION, I CAN STRING TOGETHER SENTENCES TOO

I'm surprised there hasn't yet been a copycat, tbh

AHHHH WEEEE I HAVE ALL THE FEELS ABOUT GRACELING BECAUSE KATSA BEING TOLD TO CHOP OFF A DUDE'S FINGER REMINDS ME OF THAT TIME THAT MY MOM MADE ME CHOP OFF MY FINGER AND OMGGG DADDY WHY DID YOU EAT MY FRIES etc etc

(More seriously, I feel like he used to use the stories in constructive ways, but I left around the time that it seemed like he was throwing them up to keep people from disagreeing with his opinions because he ~lived~ this shit, and bla bla)

Re: HE'S EVERYWHERE

(Anonymous) 2012-09-28 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
He's entertaining when he's reading things that I've read and that I like a lot. He has an ability to channel the experience of experiencing stuff for the first time and make you feel it vicariously which is pretty rare. But outside of that, take it or leave it. I don't care about him as a "phenomenon", Lord knows, and the whole Mark Watches thing seems fraught with peril.

Also, I think part of the genius of the Harry Potter one was that he expected to shit all over it, and even though he liked it, he was still able to critique it. I think he feels now that he's going to love everything he does and that leads him to force himself to love it and treat it positively. And that makes his reaction so much less honest and less enjoyable. And I think that tendency is going to get exacerbated more and more as he gets more and more popular and omnipresent.

Dude, easy solution: Don't fucking read his stuff if you don't like it. Why do you have to go trashing people all over the internet? There's being jealous and then there's being a dick.

Ugh. Yeah I hate his schtick too. he's just not witty or insightful and overall his review style is a goddamn mess. All that mixed with Portal is a huge Do Not Want for me.

I liked the Twilight reviews because they were in-depth enough that I wouldn't have to read them all myself to get the gist of it and I liked the Harry Potter ones - at least the earlier books - because it was like experiencing reading the books for the first time all over again. Didn't really like his reviewing style, but that wasn't why I was there in the first place. Surprised he got so popular.

Re: HE'S EVERYWHERE

I have a huge amount of trouble believing he's never heard 'the cake is a lie' meme before. He must have put two and two together if he did. I haven't even finished Portal and I know what's coming (or, uh, not coming).

it's not even that exciting of a "twist"

but i guess that's his schtick now

I don't follow him too closely, but I did have him on tumblr for a little while and I noticed that he actually started doing video games because his fans asked him to, so...yeah.

I don't have any other comments otherwise.
