I'm asking this sincerely. I've casually followed a handful of reviewers for a few years now (N Chick, Todd, Rap Critic, Paw, Spoony) because they critically examine things I'm passionate about and I've watched videos from many of the other producers, but I guess I just don't get it. The jokes aren't really funny, most of them are really really bad actors, the quality of a lot of the videos is really low (cheap webcams, bad mics, etc.), and a lot of the humor seems to revolve around being as loud and obnoxious as possible.

Don't get me wrong, FS, I have a lot of respect for the work they put in, and I think some of them are genuinely intelligent reviewers who raise a lot of great points that aren't often addressed by other critics. But I don't get why people would, for example, by DVD copies of this stuff. Or be invested in the weird backstory so much they'd sit through a movie.

Is this just a case of very different senses of humor? Are their core viewers long-time followers who're more emotionally invested in the characters than me? Help me understand FS!

No, I totally get where you're coming from. I wouldn't buy dvds of their stuff either. The acting when they are trying to be 'legitimate' (to boldly flee etc.) is bad.

I like them enough to watch them online, and I really quite enjoy some of their vids (Pokemon the First Movie, Ponyo, When Freddie Got Fingered, Labyrinth, etc.) but yeah, not enough to watch their movie.

Except maybe if N Chick and co made one, but I just quite like her in general.

Different sense of humor and more investment in the subject they are reviewing, in my case. That's why my favorite reviewer was Phelous for a long time, because he appealed to me in multiple ways and I had an interest in the types of films he was reviewing. I say reviewing, but really I should say "recapping" and "riffing," because, no, they aren't critical in the typical sense. A lot of the reviewers ascribe to a MST3k style of "reviewing." I liked that.

I was never concerned with bad acting because I don't care that much about the acting quality of some comedy review show on the Internet.

I recommend Red Letter Media's 'Half in the Bag' series if you are looking for something more critical from dudes who know movies. (I've moved on from TGWTG to here.)

It looks right up my alley, and they get bonus points for having an archive I can easily navigate. :D I just felt like I must be missing something huge with all the flailing everywhere about NC going away and all the secrets about the cheesy love-triangle drama.

The bad acting wouldn't really bother me (sometimes it was really funny) except its seemed like a lot of the reviewers are trying to add more and more 'story' to each review. And I'm like "Dude, I just wanna watch you talk about this movie for 15 minutes!"

In fairness, a lot of the people from TGWTG are on blip, too; so if you just wanted to watch certain reviewers, you could use that to find them. In same cases, there are vids on their blip pages that aren't up on TGWTG.

BTW, you totally should watch RLM's take on the three Star Wars prequels. I also think their review of Avatar (the blue cat one, not the Shyamalan one) is pretty amazing, especially the discussion of how the Na'Vi were specifically designed to be just the right mix of exotic and alien, and human and acceptable (and sexy, of course).

Yeah, I get the wanting to listen to their thoughts on a movie instead watching some stupid sketch. (In the same way people skip the host segments of MST3k.)

On Red Letter Media: If you haven't watched the Plinkett Star Wars reviews, you might want to start with that. There's some sketchy stuff in Half in the Bag reviews related to the character. Though, the sketches are a small part of the reviews typically. It might be good/interesting to know some of the back story of the site. :)
