Out of curiosity, why do you say Gabriel came close to ruining it? I haven't read it in years and my memory is kinda fuzzy (ntm influenced by rose-coloured nostalgia glasses).

He spent the entire book trying to intimidate teenage (he's twenty-four) Vivian into screwing him, disrespecting her wishes at every turn, invading her personal space. Which was fine while she refused to put up with him, but then at the very end she decides to be his mate anyway because of sexual attraction, no matter that this guy murdered his human girlfriend because "one of our own could taken that blow", in relation to the fact that he "had no problem hitting women" (direct quotes). Even at thirteen I knew that was some bullshit. ETA: Not yelling at you, but I'm still angry that such a flawless book was ruined by such a gross "happily ever after".

Dammit, you're totally right. All of that sailed right over my 13-year-old self's head. You are/were amazingly astute!

Now that I think about it - perhaps this is why the abominable movie was changed - to lessen the squick of the original ending? (Haven't seen the movie so am not sure how problematic it is, except for being a terrible movie.)

No worries - it didn't come off like you were yelling. :-)

I wish I hadn't noticed, either, when I was a kid, bummed the hell out of me, lol. But the other 99% of it was beautiful. Oh, that's true, one of the few redeeming aspects of the movie was Gabriel being portrayed as a villain for creeping on Vivian against her will. Could have done that without tossing out the rest of the original story, though - I mean, literally everything but the names, it was bizarre.

Yeah, I heard about that. Still, sometimes that works for film adaptations - the best example I can think of is Howl's Moving Castle. The book and the movie are completely different, yet both are very good IMO.

Too bad it didn't work in this case.
