Exactly. It is in every fic. It really reminds me of omniscient breasts.

What is the point? I don't get it. It's just distracting and takes me out of the fic.

Yes, that's it exactly! It is a shame, since the movie was very good about avoiding this very problem of overusing the male gaze. Darcy and Jane wore comfy, normal clothes, and viewers were treated to a lovely shot of Thor in his low-riding jeans. (Mmm.)

I guess it's symptomatic of our society considering the heterosexual male gaze as the default. :-(

I know, that was one thing about the movie I actually liked. I mean, I think the movie was okay but I really respected it for how it treated its female characters.

I guess but it's incredibly irritating. I wouldn't mind if it was a heterosexual male or lesbian making the note but it's always Darcy herself noticing or occasionally people who are not attracted to women.

So true. I hope more movies follow its lead.

Yeah, it is irritating. Like the article that you linked to said, we're taught that the "attracted to women" gaze is the default, and anything else is ~deviant. Hopefully we'll see a shift over time towards more diverse viewpoints!

For both of those sentiments we can only hope.
