I think it depends how you look at it. So, to use your example from your main post, instead of saying "I am a good student who gets good marks", and then damaging your sense of self when you fail, you could say "I currently get good marks because I work hard, I'm pretty smart, and I study stuff outside school so I'd already covered some of this work for fun. I like learning things, and I think it's important."

Of course, if you just said "I am British/American/Japanese", that's also unlikely to lead to damage to your sense of self, because it's unlikely to change.

I don't know: when I was doing Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, I was told that my self-image rules at the time were kind of harmful, in that they put too much pressure on me and made failing catastrophic. One of them was almost equivalent to "I get good grades" (a little more complicated).
