So this is the last one, right? The real last one?

Huh, I might have to finally finish the series.

It is absolutely 100% the last one in the main storyline, and Sanderson has said that he probably won't do any side stories or prequels. So yeah, it's pretty much the last Wheel of Time book ever.

Woot! I stalled on book nine when it was announced that there was going to be 15 or something instead of 12. I'd lost the love, and while 3 more seemed doable, 6 did not. If it's really over I might suck it up.

They also pick up a good bit. 10 is pretty dire, but after that there's a marked improvement and it's not so much of a slog, I think.

The terrible thing is I like Sanderson's writing better than RJ's >>

DA

I agree. I gave up on the books after book 9 (the only reason I'd read up to that point was because I had a week off school sick and needed something to distract me, badly), and when I heard they'd been taken over by an author, I was all... "No. Just, no. End this madness!"

But then I read some Sanderson stuff without realizing he was the guy who took it over until I looked up his website... and, wow. I actually really like his writing.

I just still sort of shake my head over the fact that he thinks that Jordan's is all that good!

Honestly, I think it's because of what The Wheel of Time represents to him and to a lot of people. It's what got him into the genre; it's what inspired him to write. And I don't really blame him. I was strictly a sci-fi girl until my then-boyfriend-now-husband handed me The Eye of the World and said, "read this." It wasn't the best writing I'd ever encountered, not by a long shot, but something about the world enthralled me. As a result, I decided to give the rest of the genre a chance, and now I love fantasy as much as I love SF.

At the end of the day, it's about paying respects, I suppose.

Not terrible at all, and you are not alone! I don't think Jordan was a very good writer. He was great at world-building and character creation, and he constructed a wonderful story, and that's what grabbed and held my interest. I have a lot of problems with the actual presentation.

Sanderson, however, is a good writer. He has his flaws, to be sure, but he knows how to "show" rather than "tell." I mean, The Way of Kings is nearly 1000 pages, but I can't think of anything in it that I could do without. I can't say the same about books 5 through 9 of the Wheel of Time.

I don't agree, personally, but I think your opinion is not uncommon, and in fact very close to the majority.

I think RJ's writing ability, weirdly, gets kind of underrated because he fell off his peak - because the middle/late books in WoT aren't as good as some of the ones that went before, because the pacing was terrible and the books were stolid and slow, because they were kind of dark and unpleasant, because it took so long between books.

eeeeeep posted by mistake

I think RJ's writing ability, weirdly, gets kind of underrated because he fell off his peak - because the middle/late books in WoT aren't as good as some of the ones that went before, because the pacing was terrible and the books were stolid and slow, because they were kind of dark and unpleasant, because it took so long between books, and because he was setting things up and marching through unfortunately slow parts of the plot. And I think his writing skills did fall off a little.

But if you look back at the early Wheel of Time books, Jordan absolutely had his good qualities as a writer. He is pretty good at description, he can turn a sentence well, he's competent at getting through things, and he's actually really good at capturing emotion and using free indirect discourse to describe the way that characters perceive reality. His writing is always kind of slow and expansive, but that's not inherently a bad thing. There's bits of Jordan's writing that are straight-up beautiful and there's quite a lot of it, in the first 5 or 6 books, that's unequivocally good (for the standards of epic fantasy).

I like Sanderson, but not nearly as much - for me, his writing style is a little too flashy, a little too quick. That's not very definite but I can't get it into words very well. But I think Jordan was absolutely a talented writer, not just a creator of worlds, and it's a little sad to see his reputation kind of diminishing.

It's funny, because the way I feel is exactly the opposite. I think he was a creator of worlds, but not a talented writer.

I guess, at the end of the day, it's a YMMV sort of thing. And that's cool.

It IS?! Oh wow, I stopped...about the same time the first prequel came out because I'm nervous about reading a series the Author might not live to end. But if that's the case...whooooo!

"I'm nervous about reading a series the Author might not live to end"

I have some bad news for you, anon...
