I...have to respectfully disagree - at least, as far as Roddenbury purposefully making Sulu a mixed asian. I wouldn't be at all surprised if he'd just thrown out two asian names and left it at that, because well...It was the 60's. People might have started getting a little more social conscious in the US [thanks the the civil rights movement], but we were still miles away from really being PC.

I'll give you that it's possible but just...with the social atmosphere at the time, I don't think it was really likely.

Sulu came first and was used from the "Sulu sea and it is also the name of a province in the Philippines." Hikaru came years later, was originally used by fans, and was not confirmed until it was established in Star Trek VI.

I was just saying that I didn't think that Roddenberry originally intended to make him mixed Asian instead of making Sulu the token 'Generic Asian' in the group [not that Sulu wasn't awesome], which is what the OP said - in part because the 60's was just not the best time period as far as recognizing that there are different groups inside any given race [excluding white, of course.] So that really doesn't have any impact on my point.

...I was proving you right. People look to Sulu's name to prove his mixed race-ness. However, half of his name was fan made, not by Roddenberry, and the two parts of his name were created in years far apart. Thus, Roddenberry probably didn't intend it.

Sorry I didn't make that clear. I wasn't arguing with you.
