I don't really agree. I think you have to really read strips and strips of SATW to realize that it's the author's opinion and assholishness and not a fair representation of the involved countries. Hetalia is much easier to see as offensive because it's not a take on another comic, but the first really major comic of its sort, which is to say that SATW is something most people go into realizing that it's an edit of the Nordic countries in Hetalia. SATW also has a lot less effort put into it on all accounts, doesn't portray many controversial, historical events, and just has little character depth. There are less things to get offended about.

I mean, at first, I really didn't mind SATW at first. Danes don't have a good reputation for being culturally sensitive, so I thought, okay, maybe this is a good representation of that part of the world. But humon's stance on non-Scandinavian countries is repulsive, with Poland and the two USs being incredibly, consistently offensive.

TL;DR: You can read one strip of Hetalia and be offended; SATW requires a little more reading.

Can't speak to Poland or any of the other countries, but I have no idea what people (who are not in the "HDU, AMERICA is the greatest best country God gave Man on this Earth" club) find offensive about SatW's America jokes. They're silly stereotypes played for gags, not some kind of nuanced academic evaluation of the state of the union.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-30 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
-sighs- Because if you actually look at things she's said and done outside the comics, they aren't 'just gags' - she actually believes it.

I don't remember when she posted it - but I've been linked to an entry on her DA journal where she made a 'guide' to visiting Denmark 'for Americans'...and...well. Suffice to say it was obvious from what she put in there that the stereotypes she puts into her comics is how she actually believes Americans are.

I just scrolled through her journal a bit and didn't see it, so I can't judge firsthand, but...are you sure it wasn't, uh, satire? Tongue-in-cheek? Because even in that quick skim I saw her talking about how the characters are stereotypes/archetypes.

And most of what I know of her comes from interactions in Daily Show fandom back in the day, when she was perfectly able to talk about the American characters and interact with American fans as individual human beings, rather than carbon copies of the stereotype in her continuity-free armless-chibis gag comic.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-01 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Pretty sure, from what she'd said in the article - and it's not that far off from some of the other things she's done [and admitted to believing], including actually gloating when...I believe it was Sweden? Was hit by a terrorist bomber [and how upset most of the people she knew from there were]. I can't speak for what's recently in her journal - after seeing a number of things like that I left and haven't gone back, but from what I've seen she really does believe that...and well. Acting a certain way around a specific group of people doesn't really mean you don't believe nasty things about them.

Again, I can't really judge whether someone was "gloating" over other people's pain without seeing the post firsthand.

Acting a certain way around a specific group of people doesn't really mean you don't believe nasty things about them.

Honestly, I have a hard time taking this kind of language seriously when the poor ill-used group of people we're talking about is "Americans."

(Anonymous) 2012-10-01 06:29 am (UTC)(link)
Are you honestly under the belief that Americans don't get crap from other countries all the time or that the stereotypes are harmless and fully deserved? You must be new to the Internet.

Americans don't deserve what they get any more than European countries do, and Americans are certainly allowed to be offended by idiots like humon. I'm really not sure you're familiar with the comics at all because you seem to have no idea what anyone is talking about.

Here's what I believe: Americans can take it. We should not have such fragile little star-spangled egos that we cry OMG IGNORANT PREJUDICE HDU every time some comic makes a joke about, IDK, America is collectively a little too attached to its spray tanner, or pokes fun at how American tourists can be kind of loud and obnoxious sometimes. Baby eagles are not shedding tiny perfect crystal tears because someone drew a guy wearing an American flag as a toga. It's okay. We will survive.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-04 05:38 am (UTC)(link)
The jokes are fine, the issue is that she, like most Europeans, seems to take it seriously. I've never been to Europe myself, and apparently you haven't either, but I've heard some horror stories about the treatment Americans (and Canadians who are mistaken for Americans) have received while traveling.

Maybe not MORE, but I think we deserve it. After all:

http://www.addictinginfo.org/2012/09/24/romney-offends-donors/

This man is running for president. The head of our country. Half of the country, give or take 10%, supports him in this bid.

I am from the US. I fully believe we deserve the mocking.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-01 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
This is my point. You need to stop skimming and READ all the comics from the beginning and what she writes when she posts them. There is a difference between a light-hearted jab, an intelligent satire, and ignorant offensiveness. If you only read a comic or two, you don't get the whole picture and that is one reason why it's harder to find SATW as offensive as Hetalia.
erinptah: (daily show)

[personal profile] erinptah 2012-10-01 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
I was skimming in search of a specific post I'd been told was relevant. Didn't find it (though I will gladly read it if someone can turn up a copy).

The comics I've been reading from the beginning. I've never not found their portrayal of the US entertaining. Like most people on dA, I rarely follow journals as well as works, and I'm hardly going to scour the whole thing with a fine-toothed comb looking for some mean thing said about America to be offended by.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-01 06:01 am (UTC)(link)
Everyone has different tastes. I, for one, find this (http://humon.deviantart.com/#/d5f1v84) highly disrespectful and can't imagine any sane, sober, proud American actually doing that to the flag. If you think SATW is lighthearted and humon doesn't think what she says, that's your opinion.
erinptah: (The Newsroom)

[personal profile] erinptah 2012-10-01 08:27 am (UTC)(link)
...Wait, what? A dude wearing a flag as a toga is your "so insulting to America" threshold? Okay, we are clearly never going to see eye-to-eye on this one, because I think that is an inane level of sensitivity to try to hold to.

ETA: I would be remiss for not including this.

No, the fact that humon thinks this is something a patriotic American would do is insulting. It's highly disrespectful to the flag and violates the Flag Code several times over.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-01 07:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Look up "people wearing the American flag" in GIS. I'm sure at least half of those people think that they're being patriotic.

Also consider all the shirts with the American flat printed on them. Not just in the center, but the ENTIRE shirt. There are also American flag boxers, bras and bathing suits.

I think you've chosen to put your foot down based on your beliefs of what you want to be true, not what is true (not that there's anything wrong with that, except you're making the argument for all patriotic Americans).

(Anonymous) 2012-10-01 07:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Also, consider Sarah Palin. She may have been insane, at least from my perspective, but I wouldn't call her unpatriotic. While she didn't WEAR the flag, she emblazoned it across her tour bus (thereby blatantly disrespecting the flag code's rule that it will never be used for advertising).

She also signed a flag at a rally, effectively defacing it and claiming it for her own.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-01 01:00 pm (UTC)(link)
BAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHA!

No.

I looked at the FIRST page of SATW and read the introductions of the three Scandinavian countries and THAT was enough to offend me.

Swedish people think we're "cleaner" than Norwegians and Danes? We think Norwegians are smelly fish eaters? EXCUSE ME? I have literally NEVER met A SINGLE PERSON who thinks that, and I've lived in Sweden my whole fucking life.

So yeah. One pic and I'm offended. STFU.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-01 07:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I think you're in the minority of her readers in belonging to one of the titular characters and therefore are likely to be more sensitive to the content.
