(Anonymous) 2012-10-01 02:03 am (UTC)(link)As an American, I'm not going to say we're highly culturally aware BUT we're pretty good about other English dialects. Why? Because speakers of those dialects live in the US or feature in popular TV shows or movies. If monolingual English speakers can understand it, it's English. The proper English name for the English spoken in Ireland is Hiberno-English, Irish English, or just English. You can't say "Irish" and mean anything but Irish Gaelic.
