Agreed. I live in the belly of North Carolina and we have a large North African/Arab Muslim population. (The majority are from Sudan.) It's not uncommon to walk into Wal-mart and see women dressed jilbabs and hijabs. And this is the middle of Bible Belt Country.

I thought this was about Asians in South America. Like Brazil. There's a decent population there too!

The thread is about the US and the diversity people in it because of the American character, Sulu, not being described as being written as American because he is of Asian descent. What gave you any idea it was about South America?

Anon was probably a non-native English speaker and saw "Amer-Asians from the South" and assumed it meant South Americans. There's a lot of contention, especially among Latin Americans, that Americans are referred to by the term. This has led to the calque "USians", which I personally despise.

Then wouldn't it be more, "Amer-Asians from South" or "Amer-Asians from South America" rather than "the South?" When is South American ever referred to as "the South America." As if there is more than one South America.

And, again, when a thread is nothing about US, American characters and the diversity of Yankees, themselves, I don't get how you can make that mistake. Like right of the blue someone is going to make a wrong turn at Albuquerque.

And, yeah, I hate, hate, HATE being called "USians." I'd rather be called a "Yankee" and I'm Southern.
