I think people complain about this season because it's different, and they wanted more of the same. But I think it HAS to be different, or it won't make sense. The sixties were a time of transition, and the show does transition to show the younger and more 'upbeat' characters. That's why we had so much focus on Megan and Sally. I thought it was a clever way of showing how the young people are pushing the old people out of the picture.

But I also like Megan which seems to be a rare thing so. *shrug*

I thought the fifth season was pretty uneven and I'm not wild about Weiner as a person, but the season finale actually gave me hope that Megan would be better developed as a character in the future.

Assuming they don't change direction and shuffle her over.

lol. I love Megan.

She is my second favorite character after Betty

I do think Homeland deserved to win though. The writing was a light tighter and it was just better execute. But I did generally enjoy season 5 of Mad Men.

No way I'm 0 for 3. no way.

Okay this one. This one makes fandom hates women for sure, or they just aren't looking at us anymore!

I don't hate Megan but I had too much of her. This wasn't my favourite season at all and I say that as a Mad Men fan.

I haven't watched since the second to last episode of season 2, but the only people I care for are the female characters. Even Meghan, who I only know through ONTD stuff.

Oh god just STFU with your hate-on for Megan already internet

I actually really wanted to hate her from the moment she was introduced as a recurring character and I just couldn't

Well, you know, it was the fifth season. Fifth seasons of shows are often tricky. This show probably hit its peak already and is starting its slide downward. There's no shame in recognizing that fact. It's natural. It's like when your 90-year-old grandmother's health starts to fail. It's sad, but you're also like, "well, I could see that one coming."

except no, Megan wasn't getting ~more time~ than anyone, she was just ACTUALLY GETTING time this season. She wasn't The Entire Focus, just got shuffled into the group of characters that they focused on, but as she never used to be, people aren't used to it. Meanwhile, what were the writers gonna do, spend absolutely no screentime looking in on Don's home life? Is he no longer the star of this piece now that he's married to someone you don't like, or?

I had issues with season five (Lane Pryce goes from business as usual to ultimate despair in the space of THREE EPISODES??!!!! Especially when Pete's entire theme this season was an increasingly-deeper sense of dissatisfaction and emptiness inside arguably a part of his character since the beginning of the show, wtf.) but Megan actually joining the cast wasn't one.

This!

I really loved seeing Megan deal with Don, with her ambitions, her parents - everything. I really like her as a character. In fact, I'd be hard put to name somebody on the show i *don't* like.

In my head, I thought it was interesting that Lane was the one to commit suicide, but not really out of despair so much. It was more a practical thing, that he couldn't face the humiliation of being caught and this was his solution. If he hadn't gotten into that mess, or if he'd gotten the money to pay, he'd never have done it. He was really trying to save himself with the whole bonus thing, but getting caught was the same as death to him. Meanwhile Pete's actually depressed and has always seemed like he had that potential in him, but he's not the one to do it.

Totally just using this comment to talk about Mad Men rather than how much Megan sucks!

But basically yeah, she was a new character who was no in a pivotal spot. There were times where I really wanted less of her, but looking at the season I can see the storyline she was there for and why everything with her was there. It wasn't really about an obsession with Megan so much as Don trying out this new kind of relationship that was supposed to make him a different person (at least he thought so). Megan was most interesting to me after her parents showed up.

I think it's interesting people are lumping Megan and Sally together as the younger generation. Megan is the same age as Peggy. She's part of that age group. She's not really that young.

To each their own, of course, but i loved season five as much as the other four seasons, and can't wait to see more.

This secret can be applied to Glee, with Blaine as Megan. I'm so glad they didn't get any Emmy noms this year.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-02 12:46 pm (UTC)(link)
That's because Glee sucks tho
yeahscience: (Default)

[personal profile] yeahscience 2012-10-02 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. I actually liked Megan, but I felt the entire season was comparatively weak, and the amount of time devoted to her (also relatively weak) storylines didn't really help anything.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-02 06:14 am (UTC)(link)
I loved Megan's storyline and found it interesting, well-developed and pertinent. She didn't have four seasons to develop, so obviously she wasn't going to be as rich as Joan or Peggy. But for a two season character, she was beautifully written and I loved the actress's performance of her.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-02 10:07 am (UTC)(link)
I don't dislike/hate Megan but I don't care about her either. Whether it was to show transition or not I didn't really care cause she's just so....blah. I really hope there's less focus on her next season.

I'm so behind on this show, I don't even know who Megan is. I mean, I know who she is, never cared about avoiding spoilers, but I haven't seen any of her episodes yet.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-02 02:23 pm (UTC)(link)
If you're not sorry for having an unpopular opinion, why is this a secret?
