I really have no idea what other options you may have.
Oh! I thought of one, if he is about to sit next to you can you tell him you are waiting for someone and put your bag there for a while, and then you pretend you got a text from your classmate saying he isn't coming so you take the bag out of the chair and by that time someone else sits there because he has already chosen another sit?
I mean, dunno if you do this at your college, at mine we "reserve" sits for friends all the time, so it would be doable.
