It's been a while since I felt this offended

[personal profile] 30_rock_office 2012-10-02 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
So I'm a theater and creative writing major, and one of the requirements for theater is to attend colloquiums where professionals come in and talk about their craft (be it acting, managing, lighting, etc). And normally I've been really interested in what they had to say. Until today. This guy came in--his last name is Mooney--and he just rubbed me the wrong way. There was something about him that was just...off. At the end of his talk, my professor announced to the class that there would be an additional colloquium tonight where Mooney would be preforming his one man show called "Moliere Than Thou." I thought it would be fun to see some free theater. Then his performance began...

Since it was a one man show, he interacted with the audience a lot. All of his characters were creepy old men who lusted after young women, and even a little girl who he explicitly stated was four years old. He kept touching his junk and licking his lips and leering at the girls in the audience. His monologues where all about how men were dominant over women, women should be submissive, women need to attend every whim a man has, women need to know their place. The female characters he portrayed kept twirling their hair and grabbing their breasts. I was feeling super uncomfortable, but I figured that since it was for my grade, I thought I should stay for a bit. I thought it would eventually stop, and he would do something less creepy and offensive. Wrong. Then, and I thought it couldn't get any worse, he dressed himself as a priest, and told the audience that he was trying to seduce a mother and daughter. He made more references to his junk and their breasts and continued licking his lips and leering.

At that point, I got up and left. My legs and arms were tingling, and I knew it was from the adrenaline of not wanting this threatening figure near me. I almost burst out crying as I left the theater. The sad part was that everyone else thought it was funny. Even the other girls in the audience. That made me feel even worse. Seriously, this man was everything my Mom, police officer friends, and Law & Order: SVU have warned me about. So I followed my instinct and left.

Please, if you hear about a play called "Moliere Than Thou" by a guy named Mooney, don't go. It's super offensive and beyond misogynistic.

Ugh, that is awful. I'm sorry that happened, and that nobody else seemed bothered by it. :( Like you said, it'd be one thing if that was just one part of his act, but the whole thing? Definitely overkill.

I am so sorry you had to go through that. I am so, so sorry. I cannot believe he was invited to perform at your school.

I could understand if his show was to point out the flaws in these kinds of stories or be a parody of it but... from what you say that wasn't it. It sounds so beyond disgusting.

I wish I could give you a hug.

I have to say I know what it's like to be incredibly uncomfortable with something but thinking you need to go through with it for your grade. I have had moments where I told myself I needed that credit. I needed it. I needed that high score, that perfect grade. That kind of thinking seems illogical to me now. Because now I've learned better. Your grade is never worth your sense of safety, or self-worth, or anything like that. If you feel uncomfortable in a degrading way or unsafe in an environment it is your right to leave and never come back if you so choose. It is your right to not continue feeling horrible. A grade isn't worth that because you are worth more than that.

If a teacher has a problem with that, I haven't come across one who has but I'm sure they exist, ask to do something else to replace the credit. If you still have problems with that teacher go over their head to complain to their boss.

I hope you never have to deal with something like that again.

So here, I said I would hug you right?

I bet he already has and considered it a confirmation of his manhood.

You're probably not far off in that assumption.

I'm not trying to discount your feelings at all, but just from the title alone, and from the googling I'm doing now, it sounds like the show was an exploration of works by Moliere? Like, these sites are saying that a great deal of the writing is translations of scenes that were written by Moliere.

Yeah, that's what he said he was doing. It was just...they way he was doing it and presenting it.

Wow...are you sure it wasn't supposed to be a parody and/or a play portraying the character he was playing as a creep on purpose? That sounds way too revolting to be something that's supposed to be sincere, especially if it was being performed at a school. Even if it was a parody, that sounds totally gross and over the top offensive for no reason.

And if it was sincere...wow. All I can think is that he must have been trying to be "edgy" or some stupid shit on purpose. I'm sorry you had to go through that though, it sounds really unpleasant, especially if they didn't advertise the skeevy subject matter beforehand.

No, I had no idea what the play would be about. The guy made it sound like he was going to do a parody, but he completely missed the mark. It was all for the shock factor, but even that failed miserably.

Ugh, I hate those things. Doing things just to shock people is just plain mean-spirited and nasty. And often pretty creepy. :\

Ewwww that sounds so beyond creepy. I would've been bothered by that, too. Good for you for getting up and leaving. But it sucks that you had to see it in the first place.
