Don't worry, you don't have to love a show in order to have a pairing you like.. Half of my ships are in fandoms I deteste : p

Hell, that's how I get into most of my fandoms. There are a couple of WG Mycroft fics out there, though not necessarily from BBC Sherlock, and mostly with Watson being into it.

You're fine. You aren't even doing it wrong. You can enjoy whatever aspect of a fandom you like and don't let the purists who only seem to get enjoyment out of telling other people how to enjoy things "properly" tell you different. Or better yet, just lurk and avoid them all together.

Besides, it's a kinkmeme, it's pretty much a requirement that it has almost nothing to do with canon anyway.

Seriously, though, don't sweat it. There are several fandoms I joined because I read fic first before getting into the actual canon. YANA. :)
